Mark Millar Praises Henry Cavill's SUPERMAN

Mark Millar Praises Henry Cavill's SUPERMAN

The comic book writer and proprietor of Millarworld has strong praise for Henry Cavill's Superman visage. He also revisits a few previous iterations of the character and echoes the same sentiments that the majority of fans voice when it comes to the past television and cinematic depictions of Superman.

As one of the more successful writers of Superman in modern times ( Superman: Red Son), you have to give some credence to Millar's words when it comes to the 'Man of Steel'. You can read his thoughts below on Cavill and the recent history of the Last Son of Krypton.

It's hard to put a finger on it, but sometimes it just feels right. Curt Swan and Alex Ross have captured Superman better than any other artist. Cary Bates, Elliot Maggin, Mark Waid, Gerry Conway and Alan Moore have nailed it more than any other writer. There have been some brilliant creators on Superman over the years telling wonderful stories, but my radar is attuned and I can spot an impersonation. Jose Luis Garcia Lopez draws a guy I believe is Superman just like Alex Ross can. But others can't regardless of how brilliant they may be. It's just an X-factor or an understanding of the character.

Anyway, it's the same with casting. So many people been pored over all the years and so many of them close, but wrong. Brandon Routh is actually brilliant and you only have to see Scott Pilgrim to see how impeccable his timing is. But he looked more like Christopher Reeve than Superman. Dean Cain, Tom Welling and all the others were completely wrong for the part and the big names mooted were never right either. But I completely buy Cavill in this role. That instinctive gut feeling that I'm looking at a pic of Superman.

I don't even mind the costume. Losing the trunks was pointless, throws the balance of the design off and looks truly, truly HORRIBLE in the comics. But the muted colours work really well, those dark blues and reds really making the pics look very rich and regal. I love how this is looking. Cavill was a great choice, but then Snyder has a great eye. Cracking team behind this so I have high hopes.

Millar is currently busy consulting for Fox on their superhero properties. I think it bodes well for them that he's watching the moves of the other 'superhero studios' (Marvel, WB) so closely and really has a firm grasp on the superhero situation as evidenced by the comments above.

Geoff Johns made similar coments about Ryan Reynolds and Green Lantern. I will believe it when I see it. When people like Millar say these things I think "ok they have a stinker on their hands and they have to sell it to the public".

I agree with him about Dean Cain, but he's completely wrong about Tom Welling. He didn't play "Superman" he played a younger Clark Kent and at that he was awesome. I couldn't imagine anyone else doing it better. I think people seem to confuse bad acting with the shows bad writing.

I'm glad he said that about Routh. I've always felt bad for him taking on this massive role and then having the fans for the most part reject it cause of its direction. Brandon Routh is a great actor and I hope the best for him. Now Dean Cain I thought was a terrific Clark Kent, and his Superman was not bad but he was far from terrible.

Hmmm, pretty much agree with everything he said.

Mostly excited for this since there hasn't been a proper Superman film done in my lifetime. And fortunately for me, this looks like THE Superman of my generation.

Mark Millar has made some fine comments, and after being a life long Superman fan, I think Lopez' and Jim Lee's Superman may be the best... they just look like they'd take no sh*t. (Along with Ross') Turner's just looked like a mail model.

HOWEVER, I do wish Brandon Routh had another go round as the MOS because of his look and size. Brian Singer may have ruined Routh's career with his homage to the Donner films.

Cain did a REALLY GOOD modern day Clark but was to small to be Superman, and Welling was just never into it and was just collecting a paycheck... IMHO.

@MrEko - Well...Ma Kent is dead in Superman III and IV, so that's probably a contributing factor right there.

But yes, it will be nice to him interact with her in costume.

Cain was wrong for superman he was too short and soft that was ok for clark but not for SupermanTeri Hatcher lois was almost his same hight you could tell he was uncomfortable in the suit cause he always folded his arms Lois stole the show anytime she was onscreen because Cain couldn't act and of all the Superman onscreen he got his a$$ beat every episode

It was stated somewhere in Superman III that his Ma passed away....
I can't wait for this movie. Henry has a level of maturity that makes him excellent for this role. That, and his desire to make the best possible Superman representation ever....he is the Man of Steel

Welling was great but his portrayal of Supes was limited to television. He would make a great Kon-El if the movie franchise makes it that far. But as far as losing the trunks being pointless. The hell you say! Trunks and underwear outside of tights wtf is this the 80's or Ballet. In 2013 we demand more from a characters design. I have faith in this movie it looks to be the best Supes movie of all time, which isn't very hard. But it looks to be superb story telling as well

It's because he's one of the few writers to do a decent Superman story and he's currently head of Fox's superhero universe. So when he talks, a lot of people, especially Hollywood types listen.

I'll confess that when I first saw Hemsworth in Star Trek I saw Captain America.

Millar is right about Routh though. Bryan Singer killed Cyclops and Superman with one blow.

there some sort of intimidation factor with cavill that no other superman had. and if you think about it, if you met a man that could crush you with his finger and was capable of taking over the world youd be a little scared. of course thats if you didnt know how good he can be.
CavEl

Mark Millar is a tool...

But I agree wit everything he just said. Alan Moore and Mark Waid are the two writers I've always considered the best Superman writers I've ever read, John Byrne and Geoff Johns also write great stories for the character.

Curt Swain, Alex Ross, Jim Lee and Leinil Yu draw some fantastic Supermen.

I also agree with him, the New 52's design is fantastic...but that awful powdered blue and the lines make the suit too...out there for me love it. I just like it, but I still prefer it over the old suit. They need to navy the suit up like Jim Lee usually does.

This is how the suit is supposed to look in the new 52...

This how artist usually draw it...

And I've never been a fan of those powdered blues.

And while I did want Welling to be Superman as a child, his disregard for the character made me change my tune. Routh, sad for him, only played Reeve, and while he did a good job at it, I never saw Superman. Even when he was playing Superman...I just saw Reeve. With Cain...I saw a Mexican mobster...

But Henry...I just saw Superman!!!

Countdown to epicness, my friends!!! 135 days and counting!!!

From then on, I knew Henry had to be Superman. All credit goes to Lee on that one.

He lost me at "Brandon Routh is actually brilliant"

Apparently, he hasn't seen any other films or shows he has been in and I didn't see how he was brilliant in Scott Pilgrim. It was probably his best screen performance, but it was comedy and that isn't saying much.

I have to agree with Millar on the point, that when I look at Cavill in the uniform I see Superman not an actor. I agree on his artistic choices also. Not all artists can capture the essence and feel of Superman.
