Mark Wahlberg Says He Almost Had Chris Hemsworth's Role In STAR TREK

Mark Walhberg recalls discussing the role of Captain Kirk’s father with director J.J. Abrams for the first Star Trek film. A role that eventually went to Chris Hemsworth and probably helped him land the role of Thor.

"I love J.J. Abrams. I've only seen the original Star Wars when I was a kid. My dad really wasn't into sci-fi so I grew up watching Cagney, Steve McQueen, John Garfield, Robert Ryan - movies like the one I just made, Broken City. But I'm interested in seeing what J.J. did [on Star Trek into Darkness]. I remember him asking me to play Captain Kirk's father in Star Trek and I tried to read the script and I couldn't understand the words, or the dialogue or anything so I said, 'I couldn't do this, I think you're really talented but I can't do it.' And then I saw the movie and I said holy [shite], he did a great job. So I think he'll do something spectacular [with Star Wars] and I probably wouldn't pass up another opportunity to work with J.J. again so if he wanted me to do something and I couldn't fully understand, I would probably give it a shot."

Perhaps the role of George Kirk in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek helped Chris Hemsworth land the role of Thor and perhaps it did not. In previous interviews conducted while Into Darkness was still filming, Hemsworth has stated that he would be open to returning to the role in a flashback if Abrams asked so there's a small chance the God of Thunder could cameo.

Oh man, can you imagine Marky Mark as Kirk's dad? But then again Winona Ryder was Spock's mom...

Chris Hemsworth was perfect as Kirk's dad. They look very similar! I really thought it was Chris Pine at the beginning when I first saw it!!

@TMP That video isn't doing your argument any favors. That thick ass Boston accent is ugly as hell, and he can't seem to ditch it in any roles he's ever played. The only movie he's ever been good in was Boogie Nights, were he played a good-looking idiot.

Mark Whalberg is a good actor. Not a great actor, not a terrible actor, but a good solid actor.

I love how all of a sudden people are calling great actors and actresses hacks and saying that they should stop getting work. I mean seriously these are critically acclaimed actors who have the body of work to back up their talent. Let me know when one of you are up for an Oscar or a Golden Globe.
