Comparing The First Trailer For THE WOLVERINE To Chris Claremont's Limited Series

Just how close is director James Mangold sticking to the source material found in Chris Claremont's 1982 Wolverine miniseries? A few scenes shown in The Wolverine's first trailer were straight from the comic book.

Previous interviews with James Mangold and Hugh Jackman revealed a director and actor excited to adapt the classic 1982 limited series from comic book writer Chris Claremont and artist Frank Miller. Last week, 20th Century Fox released the first trailer for The Wolverine and there were quite a few moments shown that proved Mangold and his cinematographer Ross Emery are definitely respecting the source material.

The Wolverine begins in Canada

The 1982 Wolverine comic book from Chris Claremont and Frank Miller opens with Wolverine in the Canadian Rockies after the bounty on a feral bear that’s killed some campers. The international trailer confirms that the movie opens in Faro, a small town in Yukon, Canada. From the ragged condition of Logan, don't be surprised if Mangold opens with Wolverine vs man-eating bear; even self-healing, neigh-immortal mutants need money for food.

Wolverine loves a bar brawl

As it turns out, the bear went feral due to a poisoned arrow from a hunter that neglected to finish the job. Wolverine uses his keen senses to track the irresponsible hunter to a local bar where the hunter makes the foolish mistake of attacking Logan. This scene from the trailer appears to be a very close approximation of this confrontation in the comic book. Is this man a bear hunter or just someone that gets on Wolverine's bad side?

How does Wolverine get to Japan

When Claremont’s Japan saga begins, Wolverine and Mariko are already lovers having met through a previous adventure the X-Men shared with her cousin, the mutant named Sunfire. When she mysteriously returns to Japan and Logan can't get in touch with her he boards the earliest flight to Japan he can find. The X-Men never shared an adventure with Sunfire in any of Fox’s previous X-Men movies so Mangold and his screenwriters have devised a different reason for Wolverine's journey to Japan.

Yashdia clan compound

Much of the action will take place at the Yashida-clan family castle or yagura. The trailer reveals that the film is definitely taking its design ques from the same structure in the comic book. However, where this was merely an ancestral home of the Yashida clan in the Claremont tale, the trailer insinuates that there's a research wing housed within the confines of the tower.

Silver Samurai strikes

A 'Silver Samurai' will be one of Wolverine's many foes in the film. In Claremont's story, this adversary doesn't appear until the latter portion of the comic book story arc. There's no way to divine whether this will be the case in the film however it's probably safe to assume that at the very least, a civilian garbed Kenuichio Harada will be appearing early and often.

The Hand vs Wolverine

One of the most exciting aspects of the story will be seeing Wolverine face a large group of ninja assassins. In the comic book storyline, this group was known as The Hand, the same ninja group that previously appeared on screen in 2005's Elektra. With Daredevil rights returning to Marvel we'll have to wait and see if the ninjas are ever identified by name in Mangold's film.

Shinkansen The Wolverine

The fabled Shinkansen or Bullet Train appeared in the original Claremont comic book series as well but there wasn't anything close to resembling a battle on the train's rooftop.

Viper The Wolverine

Viper appears as a companion and love interest of the Silver Samurai in the original comic book. In the trailer it appears she is disguised as a scientist but eventually shows her true colors. In the comics, both she and the Samurai have possess technology that allows them to teleport, an ability hinted at in various reports but not yet confirmed as appearing in the film.

The Phoenix Rises in The Wolverine

In the 1982 comic book series Jean Grey aka The Phoenix is dead at this point in the X-Men's history; the same as her onscreen counterpart, Famke Janssen who died at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand. However, Claremont gave a subtle clue that The Phoenix would soon be rising amid the frantic events of history. Mangold is giving Jean's death a much larger role to play in his film. The question is whether she'll actually appear as more than just a vision or memory?

Spinning out of the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, Logan (Hugh Jackman) travels to Japan where he falls for the beautiful Mariko Yashida (Tao Okamoto) to the grave displeasure of her father Yashida (Hal Yamanouchi) and her half-brother, the fearsome Silver Samurai (Will Yun Lee). But this isn't Logan's first trip to the Land of the Rising Sun or his first encounter with the Yashida clan. Based on a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) and Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard, Total Recall )and the comic book by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont.

I remember seeing a listed rating as PG-13 previously, but those all seem to be gone. Could it be bumped up to R? Here's hoping.

Funny thing is this is more accurate to a specific comic book than any Marvel Studios film.

Mark,

This is really, really fantastic. I wish there were more postings on CBM as carefully prepared and presented as this. I might even go to see this movie now.

Well done.

@samadCBM SPOILERS: I had a similar thought, however I think he will steal Wolverine's powers and he'll be a younger Shingen. THey're are 2 actors credited as portraying him, one young and one old.

Hence the flash back scene in the trailer, wolverine saving him .

@MarkJulian i don't that's gonna happen, because as you can see in the trailer,Wolverine saved Shingen when he was younger. As far as we know the young guy can be credited just for that scene.

The new movie has elements from the anime as well, the whole loss of powers was in the anime.

Hmm, Logan looking like a bum wanting a handout(Instead of tracking the hunter with the poinoned arrow.) Yukio finding Logan at bar and bringing him to Japan.(Instead of first meeting in Japan and being an assassin)Shingen and Logan old buddies(Instead of Logan tracking down Mariko, Shingen's daughter to Japan and having crime lord Shingen shame Logan and try to kill him) No HYdra at all in mini series. I don't remember Silver Samurai at all. No Jean Grey.

This is just what it says. Based on the Mini series. Like The Hobbit was based on the source material. Like True Blood is based on the book series. Like Walking Dead is based on the comic. Like Arrow is patterned after Green Arrow. Hope it's good but to even begin to believe this movie is going to be true to the beloved mini series is delusional.

The trailer wasn't amazing or anything but it looked really really solid!

Yeah, not bad, only this isn't a screen-grab of the Silver Samurai. He (his armor) is only seen from behind in the lab.

Nice breakdown. For all you haters, you aren't going to see an exact translation because: 1. It's following the events of the previous films. 2. The technology we use has come a long way since the Claremont/Miller storyline and it's going to look different.
DeadManDann
DeadManDann - 4/2/2013, 8:38 AM
To anyone thinking that the old man (who is an older member of the Yashida clan-- NOT Shingen) will steal Logan's powers to become younger, this is not the case. The younger actor who plays his WWII self is not the one who plays the Silver Samurai (Will Yun Lee) or Shingen (Hiroyuki Sanada). The trailer shows this older Yashida's photo in the background of the funeral scene. He's dead, and that's that.

SalemDog - Silver Samurai and Viper appear in the Xmen books that directly follow the Claremont story, and when you buy the Marvel Presents Wolverine graphic novel version, those are included. So they are considered part of the story even tho they weren't part of the original run.

And you do see Silver Samurai in the trailer swinging his sword at Logan. Not sure how anybody missed that.

DeadManDann is right. Imdb credits three different actors as Shingen Yashida, Yashida, and Younger Yashida. Old dude isn't Shingen.

@skidz I may not be following but I don't understand what technology has to do with the story line. The basis of the original tale was that it had nothing to do with technology but the worth of a man. A continuation of Wolverine's lone journey to being complete. Thus no other X-Men and if you notice, no guns. Basically a medieval tale of redemption set in Japan.

@TheRationalOne It's been a while but the mini series started me collecting so I remember that distinctly. And I remember Mastermind in the following issues. But it's been a while since I've read. I did see Silver Samurai in the trailer but really don't think much of it. I was hoping for the mini series which alone would have been good enough. I just see the rest as another interpretation and unnecessary filler.

I'm reserving comment for now due to past history but at least there's clearly a genuine effort to put the real characters and story from the comics on film and they deserve a Lot of credit for that if nothing else

From the trailer, it seems a large aspect of this movie is Logans' loss of his healing ability. How does that follow the Claremont story line??

@Obi- Your image proves just how lame a faithful suit would be.
