If For Some Odd, Incredibly Unlikely Reason ABC Doesn't Pick-Up AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Coulson Likely Stays Dead

Clark Gregg insinuates that without ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Coulson will probably stay dead. The actor also hints that he'll probably be the focal point and will be partaking in the action.

Speaking to Crave Online about his latest directorial effort, Trust Me (Yes, Agent Coulson is also an accomplished screenwriter and director) actor Clark Gregg parted with a few personal thoughts about ABC's potential new fall show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

On what the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot getting picked up (or not picked up) means for the future of Coulson.
Clark Gregg: "I don’t know. They haven’t told me [if the show's been picked up]. Honestly, they haven’t told me the answer yet. I certainly would be sad if it didn’t because I have a feeling it would mean that Coulson didn’t live anymore. But yeah, I think we made a good pilot. Joss knows what he’s doing, and other writers, his brother Jed and Jed’s wife Maurissa are amazing. I think we’ve got a shot."

Is Coulson a show regular of just someone popping in and out?
Clark Gregg: "I can’t predict the future but it certainly looks that way. It’s Agent Coulson’s world and everyone else is just living in it."

Does the show feature the same Coulson fans have become familiar with over several Phase I Marvel films?
Clark Gregg: "Well, I don’t know how he could be the same old Coulson given that last time we saw him in The Avengers, he was not in good shape. Same old Coulson? I don’t know, remains to be seen. You’re trying to get me killed by all the Marvel spy satellites. Yes. It’s a world of post-Avengers and it’s a world where Coulson is in better shape than last we saw him. I think in a world post-Avengers where the public is aware of superheroes beyond Tony Stark and the world of Thor and aliens coming through time portals, there’s a lot of business for S.H.I.E.L.D."

So, Coulson is back but how much is intact? Is he physically fit enough for action scenes like the ones from his Marvel: One-Shot?
Clark Gregg: "Isn’t that a great fight? Yeah, I would be surprised if that part of Coulson did anything but expand."

So, if you thought Coulson would be returning in a Zordon capacity and assembling his own team of proverbial Power Rangers, as some have speculated based on a new show synopsis; it seems you're mistaken as Nick Fury's "One Good Eye" will be getting in on the action.

"I don't like that success can determine the mortality of a character. Come on, Marvel. Let the stories decide that."

If the show doesn't get picked up, then his death is never reversed. Easy peezy. BUT...of course it'll get picked up.

his "death" was a scapegoat... if agents of shield didnt come to fruition, or go past the pilot, he would stay dead. if not, he lives

i cant believe the avengers actually tried to really kill him... everyone knows that if death is mentioned off-camera, it will never be enough confirmation

@GamerKT

I agree.
What happens to the character if the show is picked up, but is canceled before everything plays out the way it's meant to.

With Levi on this one. Loved the movie, but Coulson being dead is kind of a key part of the whole thing. Why would they get the drive that finally pushed them to become a team? Dumb idea, but who am I kidding? I'm gunna watch the show.

Maybe not RDJ! I go into the movies with dumbing my expectations down!!! But who am I? Just a Dumb consumer!!!!!

My theory on how Agent Coulson is alive is this. Look Nick Fury lie and like to keep things close to his vest. That's why Stark and Banner doesn't trust him in the movie. For all we know Coulson was rush to the medical wing of the hovercraft and survived. This is like the deleted scene from the the Avengers movie where Nick told Coulson stay in medical wing and not to come out because he told Coulson he has a plan where he will tell the Avengers that he is dead to motivate the heroes.

One does not simply NOT pick up a Joss Wheadon directed and written pilot. You can cancel it after one f'ing season. But you still pick it up.

You know what's funny, if Joss Wheadon has a lot of influence over this series, Coulson may die yet again.

You all remember what happened in Serenity.

You guys should calm down about the whole bringing Coulson back from the dead thing.

Gregg said he wasn't going to do it, but Wheadon's idea for bringing the character back convinced him otherwise. I'm skeptical, but they've said that there is a reason and it will be addressed so I'll hold my criticism until I actually see the show.

ABC is owned by Disney. Marvel is owned by Disney. Agents of SHIELD will allow for some good merchandising and cross promotion of the Marvel movies and other merchandise. Unless it is absolutely horrible, ABC will definitely pick it up.

And for all you people who want Coulson to stay dead because his death motivated the Avengers? Throughout the film, there were references that Nick Fury will manipulate people through lies or hiding information. The scene where Maria points out to Fury that the cards were in his locker, and Fury says, "They needed the push" is a strong hint that Coulson was NOT dead, but Fury wanted the guys to think he was.

"If they can bring some C class character like Coulson back from the dead, they should bring the guy who was stuck in that cave with Tony Stark back from the dead."

I've been saying that all along. Yinsen and Erskine (Captain America) both died in the EXACT same manner as Coulson. But that was really more for the argument that he really did die in Avengers....which has been settled. For most anyway.

I am with Levitikuz. Why resurrect Coulson when you can bring back a few more interesting characters. Tommy Lee Jones was awesome in Cap. Why not him?
