Kevin Feige On What Marvel Studios Wants To Explore With The HULK

Our last dregs of Entertainment Weekly's coverage on Marvel Studios' Phase II plans and beyond. Feige briefly and noncommittally touches on Doctor Strange but also has some interesting yet abstract comments about the future of the Hulk.

In case you missed it earlier this week, Entertainment Weekly revealed an in-depth, wide-covering feature on Marvel Studios' plans for Phase II and ABC's S.H.I.E.L.D. show. Here's a rundown of where you can find all that info.

EW Reveal Their IRON MAN 3 Cover; Confirm Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch For AVENGERS 2!

All that came from one spread, kudos to EW. Now, lets get to the last bit of remaining info which is in the print edition of that issue. What remains looks beyond Phase II and at what comes after The Avengers sequel slated for 2015. On Doctor Strange, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige stated, "Within the next year or so we'll really start the advanced planning on post - Avengers 2, and I would love Strange to be a part of that. There's a whole supernatural/magic dimension going on in Marvel comics that we haven't ever touched on." His statement is pretty much in line with what was reported earlier this week from other media outlets. However, it's a noticeable step back from his previous statement in January where he said Doctor Strange was "definitely" going to be one of the Phase III films. With a number of character rights recently returning to Marvel Studios, has that made Doctor Strange's Phase III roster spot less certain?

Moving on to Hulk and a potential solo film, Feige stated, " There's no script in the works or anything, but we are talking about it. All the Hulk energy right now is on Avengers 2, but Mark Ruffalo is signed up [for more films]. What we're excited about exploring and expanding is Mark - and Bruce Banner is not in Planet Hulk at all. The fun of Hulk is his interaction with humans." An interesting statement and one to sure rev the speculation engine of the interweb. Get your wheels spinning now and take your thoughts to the comment section below.

Forget Planet Hulk.
We already saw John Carter.

If he goes through that phase where Banner's mind is stuck in Hulk's body for a while, that could be interesting.

I would LOVE a Hulk film!!!

I would actually really like a Defenders film too with Hulk teaming up with Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer, and Namor (possibly Valkyrie as well) to face a darker threat that the Avengers can't be pulled into. That'd be a fun movie...

Finally, some updates on Hulk after a disappointing weekend watching Iron Crap 3.

Love to see a solo Hulk movie and excited to see Ruffalo reprise his role as banner/Hulk.

btw, in case no one is aware, for the record since Ruffalo appeared in the IM3 after credit scene he becomes the first motion picture actor to play Bruce Banner in two films.

Agreed completely with Nomis.

If you're excited about magic, why would you completely destroy the Mandarin like that?

Respect for comics out the window.

I'm so glad they are not doing Planet Hulk for now. I want to see another hulk movie on earth before they do something insane like that. It would be cool to see eventually, but there's too much to do with hulk on earth before they ship him off to another planet.

I really don't think Hulk can carry his own movie. We've had two Hulk movies, one of which was terrible, the other which was mediocre.

Both failed movies had A-list actors, and great CGI (relative for the time they were released), and solid enough directors (Ang Lee obviously being 100x better than Lettier even though Lee's Hulk was 100x worse).

Also, the only interesting Hulk-solo outings I've ever enjoyed were the animated movies Planet Hulk, and Hulk vs. Both of which had external Marvel characters as important characters in it. Planet Hulk had Beta Ray Bill, and Hulk vs was against Thor and Wolverine.

Hulk is just not interesting on his own for the most part. He's more interesting in relation to other heroes.

"Iron Man 3 would've been the perfect springboard for this dimension in the MCU if you would've gave us an accurate portrayal of the Mandarin."

A movie about a hero based around SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY would have been the wrong movie to introduce magic in.

Personally, I think that what they did with The Mandarin was to take what was a monstrously outdated racial stereotype and make him into something far more relevant in modern socio-political terms, inasmuch as what you'd see on the news as fact is there to create a false truth and to remove you from the inequities being thrust upon you, and is not what is actually the truth. Fox News, I'm looking at YOU.

The thing that struck me the most in his comments regarding The Hulk was the use of the word 'fun'. There is a deep wellspring of fun to be had with this rage-monster's interactions with the characters around him and it would be remiss of Marvel not to exploit the comedic values of this. The anxiety and trauma of the Banner/Hulk dynamic has been laid bare in two films already and the strength of Marvel Studios' output since then has been the mix of drama and comedy. The Incredible Hulk is a great film but wallowed in its portentous psycho-drama and probably has as few jokes in it as The Bible, which does not make for profitable all-round entertainment.

I don't care what comes next. I love these Marvel characters and I grew up, sorry - grew older - reading about them and all the characters they'd interact with. What's important is that thy are treated well onscreen and continue to entertain us in the way that Marvel Studios' films have done since the first Iron Man.

Let's have some FUN!

Another Hulk should have happened ages ago! Incredible Hulk (Controversial as it may be) was actually my favourite phase 1 MCU movie, and would love to see a sequel to it.

Marvel aren't exactly being clever here, considering how EVERYBODY loved the Hulk in Avengers, and was easily the most fun character in the movie, a new Hulk film would be a guaranteed hit. The reason TIH wasn;t was because a lot of people thought it was a sequel to the crappy Ang Lee Hulk, by this point people know it's a different take.

BRING ON HULK 2! BRING ON THE LEADER!

I don't see why they couldn't have made it so the *real* Mandarin was still out there. IM3 was ambiguous as to whether or not the Ten Rings organization was created by AIM or just co-opted by Aldritch.

Bring on Phase 3! Doctor Strange on the big screen will be amazing!!!

I've been wanting to see a sequel to TIH for so long! I understand why Marvel Studios doesn't want to do Planet Hulk.

Do TIH2 and make the primary villain The Leader!

I want Planet Hulk. Remember they have lied before so yeah I wouldn't say it's impossible to happen.

I'd say they are trying to back track a bit and say it isn't so that people will be all surprised and forget that it was actually leaked. Or they could be totally be doing something different for Hulk but yeah. I still want Planet Hulk and WWH. Seriously fantastic story...

And for those worried, Hulk is NOT the villain in WWH.

@KryptonianAbominationClone - I didn't say that the Mandarin was racist, that's your own interpretation. The FACT is, when the character was conceived, he was depicted as a racial stereotype that is now generally accepted as abhorrent by all right-minded people who possess the intellectual capacity to recognise it as such

I'm old enough to have been reading Iron Man when Don Heck was drawing it, so I've still very vivid memories of those 'yellow peril' archetypes and trust me, they do not sit well with today's standards of decency.

MisterBabadook - 5/5/2013, 5:48 PM
@Growler. While this is true, this didnt become apparent to me until I read the Shane Black interview where he somewhat explained it as such. By that logic it makes sense. But when it turns out Killian is the "real" Mandarin, that then goes out the window. Also, like I said yesterday, if you have to explain something outside of the movie, then you didn't do the idea justice fully, plain and simple.
