The CW very nearly had a television adaption of Wonder Woman on its current Fall schedule. However, the network decided last November that the concept needed further development and pulled it from its list of potential pilot orders. Often times, such decisions can mean that a show remains forever in limbo and never progresses beyond a few words on paper that a script writer fervently hopes a network executive will one day take a second look at. Well today, CW President Mark Pedowitz seemed incredibly excited about the potential of Amazon (the show's working title) stating, "Oh God yes," when quizzed about the show receiving the greenlight sooner rather than later.
"It’s the trickiest of all the DC characters," Pedowitz continued.
Deadline reported early this year that The CW may give the show an "off-cycle commitment", meaning that if the script rewrites are finished soon and the network likes the concept, they may opt to start production on the show before the next pilot season.
The original concept was centered around a young Amazon named Diana (yes, after a casting call leaked naming the lead Iris, the confusion was cleared up and WB confirmed that Iris was just a cover) who leaves Themyscira and life as a fierce and brutal warrior to experience the world of man. Coming from an isolated locale, she's fascinated by the modern world and things like skyscrapers, traffic, and ice cream. Not much is known regarding just how much is being reworked, although it's doubtful the network's president would have such confidence if the developers were starting over from scratch. Perhaps we'll get some news at this year's San Diego Comic Con? Geoff Johns silence in a recent interview on potential DC television shows other than Arrow seemed very telling that SOMETHING is coming down the pipeline.
UPDATE: Per
HitFix, we have the full quote from Pedowitz who confirms that the show is indeed being looked at for an of-cycle pick-up and that a new writer is tackling the script.
"[Amazon] is being redeveloped. We're waiting for the script to come in. We have not seen it yet. We are preparing to pilot it off-cycle should the script be what we want it to be. We do not want to produce something that doesn't work for that particular character. It is the trickiest of all the DC characters to get done."
Allan Heinberg, comic book writer on Marvel Comics' Young Avengers, The O.C. and Party of Five wrote the initial pilot. Aron Eli Coleite (Heroes), also a Marvel Comics scribe (Ultimate X-Men) will pen the new script.
