COWBOY BEBOP Director Says Live-Action Film Is In The Works

Sounds like the development wheel on a live-action Cowboy Bebop is quietly turning again as a recent interview with Cowboy Bebop anime director Shinichirō Watanabe says the project is "underway" but "details are a secret."

"I'm more interested in making something new so I don't feel that I want to particularly visit previous projects," said Cowboy Bebop anime director Shinichirō Watanabe by way of a translator. Sad news for anime fans as talks of a Cowboy Bebop sequel or prequel have been ongoing for nearly 15 years. However, Watanabe did drop this little gem. "There is a project underway in America for a live-action version of Cowboy Bebop. But the details are a secret do I'm afraid I can't talk about that. Shinichirō went on to say "Cowboy Bebop was influenced a lot by American film so I'm interested to see how America will turn that into a live-action movie. I hope they'll be able to keep the feeling of the animated Cowboy Bebop."

The last bit of info on the live-action effort was over two years ago, when then-attached actor Keanu Reeves essentially confirmed that the project was dead and that he'd gotten too old to play Spike. However, the latest from Shinichirō and the fact that details are still being kept a secret would seemingly indicate that the project is once again in active development. Screenwriter Peter Craig wrote a draft that was deemed very good but too expensive by 20th Century Fox, who were working very closely with Sunrise and had Shinichirō secured as a producer.

"Cowboy Bebop (カウボーイビバップ) is a 1998 Japanese anime series developed by Sunrise. It's production team was headed by director Shinichirō Watanabe, screenwriter Keiko Nobumoto and lead character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto. The story follows the episodic adventures of a misfit bounty hunter crew comprised of Spike Spiegel - a master Jeet Kune Do practitioner and former member of the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate; Jet Black a former law enforcement officer of the ISSP (Inter-Solar System Police) where he was known as The Black Dog; Faye Valentine - a voluptuous novice bounty hunter; Edward- aka Radical Edward, a master computer hacker; and Ein - a Pembroke Welsh Corgi "data dog." The series has become a cult classic and garnered major science fiction awards and international praise for its characters, story, voice acting, animation and outstanding soundtrack from anime composer legend, Yoko Kanno.

OMG not Fox. God look at what they did to DBZ evolution. I love Cowboy Bebop but Fox will just dumb it down to the point that it isn't even recognizable in comparison to the source material.

I watched the movie last year. With the terrible track record of anime adapted to live-action movies, I would rather see a sequel to the anime movie.

I remember when I was a teenager and watched Cowboy Bebop on Toonami, I had a crush on Faye Valentine ha ha.

@NeoBaggins Yah, Edward is a girl.

Well, they kinda already did turn Bebop into a live-action movie. More than once, actually. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdt1N2101pU http://youtubedoubler.com/?video1=EGWfothiSU8&start1=0&video2=kM886uBYGmo&start2=0&authorName=FAV

Give it to Rian Johnson or Neil Blomkamp and I might be interested in seeing a live action version.

Beebop is a classic and just fine as it is. Much more of it's appeal and unique experience would be lost by doing it as a live action then gained no matter who is making it.

I really wanted Keanu Reeves for Spike, but he has gotten to old...but hell if they can make the original Star Wars cast look young again for Episode VII, then I suppose they can do anything. I hope this isn't false hope because I really really want to see this movie finally happen!

At least Keanu "one dimension" Reeves is not playing Spike. There has to be at least some younger and better actors in Hollywood for the part. But Fox? Damn, that's a mood killer.

Wait people are serious about Keanu Reeves playing Spike. The dude has zero charisma, something you need for Spike, the characters the embodiment of Charisma.

Keanu reeves had a messed up life . like his fiancé having a miscarriage and then her dying in a car crash a week later

I will march down to FOX and torch the place!!! Who's with me?

YOU WILL NOT RUIN MY FAVORITE ANIME LIKE YOU RUINED MY FAVORITE SUPERHERO TEAM!!!

Watanabe better be involved with the movie's creation and Bryan Singer better stay far Far FAR away from it's set!!!

I really think Spike Spiegel should be played by Josh Hartnett! I can already hear the groans from all of you but take another look at his brief but amazing performance in Sin City! He's the ultimate Spike!!!!!
Hopefully this entire project will never see the light of day.
