First Look At Live-Action KUROSHITSUJI Anime

Peep these new images from the live action adaptation of Black Butler, a popular manga written and illustrated by Yana Toboso. The manga series follows Sebastian Michaelis, a demonic servant bound by an ironclad supernatural contract to Ciel Phantomhive, the 13-year-old head of the Phantomhive aristocrat family. Ciel is also head of the toy manufacturing Funtom company. The terms of their contract are that Sebastian helps Ciel finish specific tasks but most importantly, help avenge the murder of Ciel's parents. Once these tasks are complete, Sebastian will be permitted to consume Ciel's soul. While the manga and anime are set in 19th century England, the live-action film is taking a few liberties, setting the events of the movie in a fictional 2020 metropolis infused with both East and West culture. The catch with Ciel (Gōriki) is that only males are allowed to lead the Phantomhive family so with the help of Sebastian (Mizushima), she dons male clothes in disguise and takes up position as head of the family. Japanese model Mizuki Yamamoto also factors into the film as an original character, a maid named Lin.

Kentaro Otani (NANA) and Keiichi Satou (Tiger & Bunny) are co-directing the film. The film will be released in Japan in first quarter of 2014.

His hair is NOT blue...he doesn't look all that British to me (or white for that matter). It seems they just grabbed some random kid off the street in Japan and strapped an eyepatch on him.

The only decent anime adaptation I've seen was Rurouni Kenshin. The rest - Ranma 1/2, Death Note... were not really good.

So, they're completely changing the setting, the era , and the gender of one of the main protagonists, and people are okay with it.

That's funny, because when Warner Bros were planning to do this with Akira, people went apeshit.

Well I think one issue American adaptions face is that fans expect them to condense multiples issues/episodes into 2 hours or are expecting it to all be done in a trilogy.......folks if the story could be told in one sitting then there would be no need for multiple issues/episodes.

Then of course most anime/manga is rooted in Japanese culture. One huge thing is responsibility to family. While every culture has that, in the US if we don't like our family we will pick up and move across the country to get away from them.

Also lets be honest, most anime/manga have characters with personalities taken to the extreme that is way too fictional even for american audiences.

Except that every other source says that it's an adaptation of the manga's original storyline.

I've never actually read the original manga, so I don't know if this is going to be good or not. I just find the double standard to be somewhat humorous.

I completely agree! Especially on Death Note. I would also add Beck to the "decent anime adaptation" category.

Rurouni Kenshin is so far the only decent live action Japanese flick I can recall seeing in the last 3-4 years.
