Adi Granov On IRON MAN 3 And Extremis

Warren Ellis made it clear very early on that he had very little say in what was happening in 'Iron Man 3' and that he had word from his friend, Pearce that it was based 'very loosely' on the work that he wrote. But what did Adi Granov think of the film? He's the other side of the 'Extremis' storyline, the individual responsible for the art. Before we get to his thoughts, it should be noted that Granov also provides conceptual art for 'Marvel Studios'.

Continuing on, Granov's first words on Iron Man 3 in a new interview with CBR was that he enjoyed the film. "I thought it was a lot of fun. It had a lighter mood than I expected, which seems to go against the popular opinion that it was darker," said Granove. He continued, "I've only seen it at the premiere though, so it's really hard to judge objectively until I see it again."

Granov then moved into the visual interpretation of the Extremis violence which visually, was a significant departure from how he illustrated the affliction in the actual comic book. "Well, I don't think it should be judged against the comic, but seen on its own merits. It took the basic idea and some of the visual elements, but made it into something different," he stated." Touching on the tone of the film overall, he acknowledged, "It was definitely lighter, in my opinion, than the idea in the comic, but larger in scale. I think the domestic terrorist angle is made more terrifying in the comic, to the extent that I am surprised we were ever allowed to do it, while in the movie it is made more appropriate for a blockbuster film." Granov knew that with 'Iron Man 3' existing as a monstrous family-oriented summer blockbuster, things would need to be changed. "Visually, the Extremis design and transformation are in the realm of horror, which obviously wouldn't work for a big action movie, so it was made more audience friendly, less scary, more dazzling," he concluded. There's more from Granov in the full interview over at CBR, so if you're interested give the link below a click.

I liked both. I don't see why everyone has to over dramatize everything's importance.

Loved the movie. I'm not a purist, things need the be changed when crossing between different medias (that's a word?).

@HouseOfExtremeSexiness

In my opinion, it does. When I see most people put it down, it's all about comparisons.

Lets face it the only reason anyone dislikes IM3 is because of the Mandarin twist. And people try to say that there's to many plot holes and the trailers lied to us. Well most of the plot holes are solved if you actually use your brain and apparently the MOS trailers make it look much more serious than it actually is. At least that's what Jeremy Jahns said in his review.

It definitely went away from the Extremins storyline. The movie definitely could have been great, no reason to abandon the source material.

I thought the movie was good but I didn't go see it more than once like I have done many of the other Marvel films. I guess I'm just not as pissed because I've never been an Iron Man fan from the comics.

Now I've been supremely pissed with what that hack Singer has done with the Xmen, so I guess I sort of get what some of you are saying. But nothings worse than Xmen. It could have been so great and epic and instead we get Wolverine and his gimp suit friends. Ahhh, I'm getting my pressure up.

@fettastic Wow what crawled up your ass sounds like your still angry at me from that Winter Soldier article. The thing about Extremis isn't a plot hole. The shrapnel thing will be explained in the Dr Wu one shots, Killian breathing fire means he can regulate better than the other Extremis users and so what if it looked like fireworks? How dose that and Killian dying have anything to do with what I said?

There are several plot holes in IM3 that cannot be solved via movie details. Just a few...

How could Tony call the Mark 42 armor to Pepper when she didn't have the gps injections Tony recieved in the begining.

How could Pepper then even use the suit when Tony told Rhodey all the suits are dna coded to him.

Tony answers the door to Rebecca in the Mark 42 even though he knows it's not functional? If he was wearing any of the other 41 suits he could have easily defeated 3 helicopters.

There are so many it's overwhelming to list them all.

@IgnurRant She didn't need them Tony sent them and assembled them onto her. But if you want to go into detail of ho a self assembling fictional piece of technology works well find someone else. Tony wears his suit to the door because he feels exposed without it. Hes suffering from PTSD and sleepless nights cut him some slack. Plus only the sloppy thrown together prototypes where coded to him.

I will say that I agree the movie was definitely lighter in tone than what the trailer suggests. I mean when the first trailer hit you were like OH SNAP the Mandarin is about to wreck shop! But it really was just an action comedy, I didn't hate IM3 I thought it was good just had too many things that irked the hell out of you.

I don't think some of you know where to draw the line between plot hole
and suspension of disbelief.

Or maybe some of you just get anal with movies you want to criticize

IM3 issecond best IMmovie, first is best ofcourse. IM3 is way more darker then IM2 and even first. Stark not sleeping for days, having nightmares, panic attacks wich makes him more human then ever. This naturally effects his tech skills and Mark 42, wich was the latest suit and very unigue kind. If you get over the twist, movie is more easy to watch and Kingsley did great acting, he was funny and showed 2 totally different roles. Pepper, Happy and Killian were great also, all i missed was little more action from War Machine, but he was clearly just backup and friend for Tony. Tony Stark is such great character and RDJ has given so much to Marvel and to us fans.

Movie was just too over the top and slapstick at times, it felt like a movie from the 80's, radically different from the tone in Favreau's movies. Kung fu Pepper jesus, dafuq was that about. Dont even want to talk about extremis in the film. Decent movie on the same level as Thor.

Since when is jumping in the air and throwing a punch, swinging an object considered Kung Fu?

Tch. This movie was a total load of crock. This farce has no excuse for the direction they chose to go with. I'm not ripping the plot by much besides it being structured very weak as a story. How is it that the one major plot twist is what everyone hated the most about the movie? Lol. Talk about irony.

@TheHeat

So was Hellboy but I thought that movie stunk worse than hot garbage. Hellboy II (thank god) was much better. Sword of Storms and Blood & Iron were also better movies.
