Guillermo del Toro Says No Director's Cut For 'PACIFIC RIM'

Director Guillermo del Toro says there's not going to be a director's cut of "Pacific Rim" despite cutting a few scenes with the help of Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) and Alejandro Iñárritu (Babel, Birdman) during the editing process.

In a previous interview, "Pacific Rim" director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he cut over 10 minutes from the film after sitting and going through his kaiju epic with directors Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro Iñárritu. However, del Toro insists that the film released in theaters is his preferred version in an interview with BleedingCool. "This is my director’s cut. There will not be an extended cut right now, we’re not planning on it, but there will be deleted scenes and they were deleted for a reason," said del Toro.

The director also revealed that he filmed three different ending for the film in a separate interview with BadAss Digest, including one that insinuated that the characters portrayed by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi would embark on a romantic relationship. But del Toro didn't think that was the right action to take for the jaeger partners. "When I was working on the movie we had three or four different versions of the relationship between Charlie and Rinko because I wanted to see if I could make a story about two people liking each other without having to end in a kiss," the director stated. He continued, "So when I shot the ending we shot three versions. I’ve never done this before, but instinctively I thought we should do three versions. We did one version where they kiss and it almost felt weird. They’re good friends, they’re pals, good colleagues."

"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse."

No director's cut sucks, but I think it was smart that he shot different endings to determine which would provide the best resolution when looking at the movie as a whole. Wish they did that with IM3. Or TDKR. Or any other CBM with a let-down ending.

the funny thing is that kiss or no kiss, it seemed pretty clear to me that they were ending it romantically. the whole "ignoring the comm when they're trying to contact you" thing was pure "spy who loved me."

I would buy it.

Also fettastic I could turn your statement around and use it for The Avengers.

and isn't this whole "poor character development" thing getting a bit silly? it's a battle movie. i don't need to have a bunch of feels to watch people fight.

there were solid sequences explaining the motivations and problems of raleigh, stacker and mako, and there was exposition to help us understand the conflict in the aussie team. that's all i would have wanted. i'm good with that. why the hell would i want them to waste time telling me any more than that?

now i'm not saying it was flawless. i think both scientists AND perlman's guy dragged it down, and the jerry lewis english guy in particular was painful to endure. i have a couple of other issues too. but "not enough character development" is definitely not one of those issues.

Fettastic I love how you bash a movie for being nothing but action and yet you jerk off to marvel films. character development in avengers is ZERO.

@fettastic:
I: Yes but the story and the characters?

GDT: Shh, want it to end up like Hellboy?

@fett oh get off your high horse, mr. criterion collection. you get an F on your paraphrase because it doesn't have the same meaning as my original. i didn't say "who needs it," i said i thought there was enough of it.

i'm an english literature teacher for christ's sake, but i understand the difference betwen various movie genres and i understand that you don't need to resort to an "x minutes of romance, x minutes of crying, x minutes of fighting" formula to make a solid story. (well, unless you're making thor, captain america or incredible hulk, i guess.) were there deeply developed characters in terminator? predator? blade 1? batman 89? hang 'em high?

as a creative writing teacher, i teach people to trust their audiences. tell people what they need to know, but don't fill pages with unnecessary data. readers and audiences are supposed to fill in the gaps, but maybe you guys have become incapable of doing that these days.

i guess that means i'm just smart enough to understand the characters using the information that was provided.

and i guess that means... um... you aren't?

Cut scenes would've been on character development, with people who can barely act. Does anyone really want to see that extended version? Do a directors cut only if there were more kaiju battle scenes left on the editing room floor, otherwise no thanks!

After watching the movie. I dont think a directors cut will make it any better. The movie is fine the way it is.

Yeah, the action and visuals were superb--everything else is shit. Terrible cast (sans Elba), and horribly written.

I think the movie's fine the way it is, too. I absolutely loved it. But I don't think it needs a Director's Cut. Or a sequel, to be honest. It's good as it is, as a finite story. Not everything needs a sequel and these characters aren't as compelling as, say, the one's in Hellboy. There are far better ways for GDT to be spending his time. Dark Universe is one.

@fett - i understand your desire to lash out at me because i criticized you, so i'm ok with that. but please feel free to enlighten me about all those instances of poor grammar. if you're complaining about my lack of capitalization, well, that's a philosophical choice and i assure you it doesn't happen in the classroom. for the record, though, capitalization isn't an element of grammar, it's an element of mechanics.

and it seems like you missed the point, as usual, regarding my criterion collection remark; i was using it figuratively because it, like you, pretends to be sophisticated and intellectual when in reality it's just being pretentious and parroting the opinions of others.

Looks like Del Toro is not as good as all the fanboys said he was. I don't know how he got so much hype. He made a couple of average Hellboy movies, Pans Labyrinth, and 1 good Blade. Why is everybody so far up his ass?
