Sinestro May Not Be A Villain In Green Lantern

Is it possible that Sinestro will not be revealed as a villain in the first Green Lantern movie?

SuperHeroHype recently talked with Green Lantern director Martin Cambell, who had something very interesting to say about the upcoming Green Lantern movie.

"I think it will stick closely to the origin story, but we all know Sinestro, for an example, is a character who goes over to the dark side, and of course, Carol, played by Blake Lively, in later versions becomes a bad guy as well. I think people will be able to see forward to the characters that in the comic went on to (become bad guys)… but people will be ahead of us on all that I think."

Does this mean we will not see Sinestro convert to the "dark side" in the first movie? Maybe it will adhere to the comics and reserve Sinestro's villainy for a later movie.

The Green Lantern will be directed by Martin Cambell and will star Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Peter Skarsgaard. Mark Strong is reportedly in negotiations for the role of Sinestro.

I think this might be a good way to go about Sinestro's turn.

They should take their time with his story-arc, so we really get that impact of his "turn to the dark side." If they rush it, it's sort of like "Am I supposed to care?"

Good move on their part if they take their time.

Is Hector Hammond going to be enough of a villain to propel the first movie if they go this route?

Yes.

I also think this would be a good move.

Dogs: Its the Green Lantern. There is always some sort of cosmic catastrophy happening that would be an effective challenge for the core to prove themselves. Then throw in Hammond and your set, don't you think?

Hawks-That is true and makes sense with the other article saying the movie was going to resemble aspects of Flash Gordon. It looks like this might be more in space than earth than I thought.

It will be mostly in space. Which is great cause that's where lanterns belong

I already knew this. The script says that it will show Sinestro before he turned evil (though he's still a prick throughout the script). The main villains are Legion and Hector Hammond.

Of corse they will leave sinistro turn eveil to another movie which for the fans is awesome, because it means more Green Lantern heading our way :D

although DC's film output is lower than Marvel's, the DC films minus a few have had REAL quality to them.
from 2000-2007, Marvel turned out more movies than DC had in 20 years.
but only a few of them had that SPARK.
as of 2008, Marvel has been reconstructing it's film universe and DC is FINALLY tying their movies together with Green Lantern.
i believe this movie will not only be a hit but it will be DC's Avatar!
i CANNOT wait to see this film!!!!!!

Thank god. I completely approve of this entire cast now also. I watched "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee" to see how well Blake Lively can act. Well, she is one hell of an actress. This movie is going to be amazing.

I always wonder why we are all in such a hurry to see EVERYTHING in a CBM. It’s like we want the whole mythology to unfold NOW. Well, in the comics it takes years for things to unfold and for characters to turn or change. Yes we all know as fanboys that Sinestro will become evil, but could you imagine being one of those noncomic readers who sees these films and the thrill they'll get seeing Sinestro turn or at least be revealed to be evil in a couple movies or so. Sometimes I think we miss out because we already know so much about the characters. I think if we just have patience and let things unfold at a sub-break neck speed you get a much better story. Remember the old saying of the father bull to his son. "You want to run down there and do a single cow, or walk down there and have the energy to do them all?" ...Crass I know but it's more colorful than slow and easy win the race or the tortoise and the hare, you know?

On that same line of thought I think that not knowing exactly what’s going to happen is why I really enjoy movies like The Dark Knight over CBMs like Sin City, 300, and even Watchmen; its because movies like the latter films are near exact retellings of the comics they stem from, in the case of Sin City I felt kind of hollow because even though it was very fun to see whole frames from the comic that I loved dearly recreated on the screen I knew exactly what was going to happen and there were no surprises. TDK was more fulfilling because it was an original story and actually moved things around a bit (not so much as to be disrespectful to the source, but just enough to throw your preconceived notions as a fanboy a curveball). Origins story can kind of straddle the line between the two so I’m looking forward to seeing where Campbell takes GL. What will he alter? What will he recreate? How will the world be presented? It’s a fun level of expectation.

I'm liking the way they're going with this. If the did everything the first movie, there would be no room for a franchise

I think this move will definately prove to be a good one. Trying to put together Hal's origin and Sinestro's betrayal is one thing that made First Flight suck.

Correct way. Give him time so you can understand the emotional journey that leads his transformation

It's a good idea. Don't kill the best villain in the Green Lantern universe in the first movie, build it up.

That's what I hated about first flight... Hal was in the Corps for like 5 minutes before the Sinestro Corps started... all the DC animated movies have rushed through the story and missed the point. With this movie, they have a chance for plot/character development so I hope they take it. Sinestro should be portrayed as a power hungry dick, but it's too soon for him to be the villain.

If Sinestro is not the villain in the first film, then i would like to see the Black Hand or Kanjar Ro or them both with Hector Hammond.

Definitely Black Hand sholud be the villain!

If Sinestro is not the villain in the first film, as long as that doesnt mean he wont be appearing in the first film, who cares???

He wasnt a villain till later on anyway???

He'll probably change near the end, thought that anyway??

Its all HECTOR HAMMOND.

This may sound weird, but I was right! I had started a GL script and one of the leading directions I tried to stick to was to make Sinestro NOT the villain in the film. Mainly because it is a better story between him and Hal if you can establish that they were friends first, which comes after his first adventure as a GL...

Hooray me! But seriously, this is good news.

I like this move. Give him the chance to be the friend and mentor to Hal then when he turns it will make more of an impact. One thing I hated about First Flight... they rushed the whole Sinestro villiany thing.

I read a first draft of the script, and no Sinestro is not the villain (though he still is a prick throughout the film). Legion and Hector Hammond are the villains

Yes FIRST FLIGHT was a rush job!!

SIN will turn evil near the end probably ready for a sequel, though i hope they leave the actual SINESTRO Corps till at least GL 3.

i hope sinestro is not in it. going from good guy to evil guy and major nemesis in one movie would wind up being a bit shallow. we don't need a new "venom-in-S3" shallow experience yet . . . still too soon, too soon!!!

I still say fans are in for a real treat with this movie and Thor coming out so close together. Both are looking like they will be epic.

juggy4711 - 1/17/2010, 10:25 AM
I say good move. Only draw back will be if the general movie going audience doesn't dig on GL then we may never get a sequel and therefore no Hal vs Sinestro. If the movie turns out to be as cool as we hope this should not be a problem.
