SPECULATION: Who is Peter Quill's Father?

SPECULATION: Who is Peter Quill's Father?

There's a lot of red herrings, misdirections, and sources to draw from when it comes to the origins of Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) and while I have no clue where they will take the story of his Father in the MCU, I am also going with a very unique (but hopefully sound) theory.

So like many of you, I left Guardians of the Galaxy wondering where they were going to take the story of Peter Quill's father. If you think that Marvel and Kevin Feige would do a straight adaption of J'Son from the comics, that could be a bit difficult. Main reason being, that the story of Star Lord's origins has been retconned and redone almost way too many times to count.

In all variations, Meredity inevitably dies, J'Son is usually involved. In some caes he's an outcast Inhuman, in other stories he's Spartoi.

Firstly, the whole story of Star-Lord squirming his way into some glactic mantle has been (seemingly) left behind. They have gone with him describing himself as Star-Lord, and this already throws out a long of history of continuity introduced by Steves Englehart.

So we can assume that the dead beat (step) father croaking over is out, the aliens killing Meredith is definitely out. This leaves us at square one.

But what if J'Son isn't his Father, but rather it's Adam Warlock?

The evidence to support Adam is pretty supportive of my theory. I mean, we have an 'angelic being of light'. While that could refer to the beam of light that transports the Ravagers to the surface (more on that later). I think that also could refer to the bright complexion of Adam Warlock; Meredith leaves this open to interpretation, and her dying before she can fully explain things is very convenient.

That said, while Warlock is a cosmic being, he also has origins on Earth. Being created as the perfect human being by the Enclave, he eventually escapes and roams Earth for a bit, eventually finding and trying to mate with Lady Sif. This is due to his limiated life experience, and this is a very awkward moment for him. Now after that you get into Counter-Earth and him being a champion; with him eventually being named Adam, but we'll ignore that (as Marvel studios occasionally does). I think all of that can, could, and will be condensed (if it's adapted)

My theory is that Adam escapes the Enclave, and roams around Earth, eventually encountering Meredith. Again, he has no life experience, so a lot of things would be new to him, and similar to his origins in the comics, he could try to awkwardly mate with Meredith instead of Lady Sif, and thus Peter is born. Even going as far as to get his name, 'Adam', from Meredith rather then four Counter-Earth teens.

Told you, Counter-Earth is unneccesary.

We could involve Magus, and certainly that could be an interesting point for the future, where Magus and the Universal Church of Truth put out the bounty on Quill, not J'Son as is most peoples gut reaction. That's certainly a very realistic and exciting possibility for the future. It also adds a very interesting angle to the inevitable adaption of The Infinity Gauntlet.

Contrary to some editorials on this site and this Film School Rejects article, I argue that the first film is a very good movie, and there's a lot to look forward with the storyline of Quill's Father in the sequel. If you liked this article, I encourage you to give it a 'Thumbs Up' you

I would be all behind this. Great way to intorduce Adam Warlock, also with all build up that GOTG had for Quill's dad ("angelic being of light", something so mysterious that even Nova Corps don't can't identify) J'son might be a bit of let down, unless his story is also changed.

Good idea, good editioral, thumbs up!

Great article. I think the storyline with his dad has potential to be really amazing, unlike other father stories in superhero films (TASM and TASM 2).

The idea that Yondu kept Quill instead of giving him to his father can be played out really well in GOTG 2.

J'son would be anticlimactic

personally id rather keep adam warlock the way he is and not drag his origins into quill's. i think it's better to keep J'son, perhaps the spartax are different from what we are used to in the comics.

The real hint is the Nova research, that they can't identify him. You would think that their database would be pretty extensive. I loved Guardians, loved it. But there were a few things that I didn't like. 1. Drax and Gamora should have both been more badass but that's nit picky. 2. At the end when Ronin was about to destroy everyone he went on his religious rant. It didn't really fit, I know they called him a zelot and all but there were no other religious references. They should have stuck with a warrior that was intent on punishing the Nova's for war crimes. 3. The Nova's themselves. There were no powered Nova's and they didn't appear capable of any kind of long war with the Kree. Especially when the Kree were fielding warriors as powerful as Ronin and Korath. It never felt like a treaty but that the Nova's were surrendering. 4. The big one... why would you give something as powerful as an Infinity stone to the Nova's to protect from someone as powerful as Thanos when they couldn't even protect themselves from Ronin? That insistence on giving the stone to the novas bothered me. Like I said I love the movie but those are some nit picks. As far as Quills father goes, I saw a theory that if was Starhawk. That makes a bit of sense, especially since he was an integral part of early Guardians storys, has kind of always been a presence for them and he had 2 kids. Plus he's one who knows.

sikwon- i wouldent mind him being starhawk thats not a bad idea. also i think the nova corps where weak because they weren't expecting an attack.

I totally think you could be on to something and I wouldn't be against this at all, although I love Adam's cosmic origin story, I would be willing to compromise because this could be played off very well and make a great central story for GOTG 2.

I think one thing we're forgetting is that Yondu called his dad a jackass. Even tho Meredith said he was an angel, why did he send the Ravagers to go et Peter? Gotg2 is supposed to answer these questions but im not completely sold on it being warlock
kinghulk
kinghulk - 8/10/2014, 1:30 PM
charleslord- good point J'son is a jackass. maybe they make them special or something.

@kinghulk... The sneak attack thing, Nova Prime had argued earlier with the Kree ambassador (or president or whatever) about Ronin slaughtering out posts. At the least it was a failure on the Corps part to be at Defcon 3 and take a good defensive posture. At worse Gunn and the writers struggled a bit with the while Ronin as an enemy part of the story. They handled other aspects great... Quill, forming the team, Thanos searching for the stone, Yondu and Quills back story, the Collector explaining the Infinity Stones (we got to see a Celestial welding an Infinity Stone to destroy a planet!!. They just dropped the ball in the Nova vs Ronin/Kree elements of the story. I think part of that has to do with Gunn not really liking the Novas, he flat out said he didn't like the Nova character and hated the helmet. It's really the only part of the movie that really stands out as being a miscue for me. It was obvious the 1st time I watched it, the 2nd time I was in full "wtf James!!" mode.

sikwon - 8/10/2014, 1:36 PM
It won't be Thanos because I don't think Yondu would blatantly cross him like that but I could be wrong, he crossed him for the Stone. I don't think it will be Warlock, that would be cool but I'm not sold. Maybe an Inhuman, as a convenient way to tie that together or maybe a Titan? Make him related to Thanos as a nephew or something. J'Son would be the best just because I would love some version of War of Kings.
kinghulk
kinghulk - 8/10/2014, 1:36 PM
silkwon- i agree it could have been handled better, perhaps if this had happened on a nova corps outpost rather than xandar. i would have liked to have seen a thor style flashback showing a battle between the nova corps and the kree, they could have showed of the power of some of the more powerful nova and gleen close could have narrated it.

@Kinghulk...that would have been perfect. Something along those lines. My biggest bugaboo I guess is the lack of powered Novas. @Darktower.. (awesome books).. I loved the Kevin Bacon tie in at the end. I've seen people complain about it but it was funny as hell.. "whys he dancing, that's stupid!!" Footloose! And who has a bigger stick up their butt then Ronin. It was great.

It would be interesting to see a father-son dynamic in the Guardians IF Warlock did turn out to be his father. But I still think that J'Son is his father. I mean if J'Son is still the Emperor of Spartoi Empire in the MCU it could possibly expand the MCUs cosmic a bit more.

If Marvel Studios doesn't have the Shiar Empire under their brand, then they can just replace them with their sister race the Spartoi. Heck Marvel can even show that the Spartoi Emprie is in conflict with other empires and plant some seeds for future movies.

I know it won't be, but what if they made his dad an Atlantean. It would be one way to bring Namor into the Marvel films.
Laconic
Laconic - 8/10/2014, 3:56 PM
They already had Spartax concept art in for the film, and planned to have it in the film at one point, but are likely saving it for the sequel, due to J'son being a major force in the comics in the last few years it wouldn't make any sense to change that.

That was adams cocoon in the film and the thor 2 post cred scene. james gun CONFIRMED it. sooo there goes your theory.
