Two Reasons The New 52 Is Disliked

So it's been about a year since DC Comics launched "The New 52" out of the ashes of Flashpoint...while some comics are great to many (Batman, Nightwing, Swamp Thing, Aquaman) others are disliked by many (Red Hood & The Outlaws, Deathstroke, Mr. Terrific, Hawk & Dove), Hybrid gives you explanations as to possibly why.

Hello CBM.com users, Hybrid here with the top two reasons the "New 52" is disliked in a general view, so I'm not talking about just one comic individually. The two reasons are simple, CONTINUITY & CHARACTER CHANGES, which both at times blend together making a grey spot but for the most part are separate.

1) Continuity:
When DC started their reboot many people had this question, "What is still canon and what has been taken out?". For a few comics many things are the same if not completely unchanged (Green Lantern) while others are mild to heavily changed (Justice League). Another question, which very good, is this, "Is this a NEW universe or still the same one as before?". The answer to that is actually simple, it is. The new universe is called Earth Prime or Prime Earth instead of New Earth. Confirmed at these links:
James Robinson's Confirmation
Dan DiDio's Confirmation
This confuses readers as they don't know what is still "true" and if "X-thing" still applies to the character. Also, many characters are altered too, which brings us to our next reason....

2) Character Changes:
Many characters have been altered or even deleted from the comics due to the New 52, here's a short list of changes (major & minor)....

  • Amanda Waller is now SKINNY
  • Donna Troy & Walley West DON'T EXIST
  • NO previous Blue Beetle before Jaime Reyes
  • Superman has NO Fortress of Solitude
  • Tim Drake was NEVER Robin
  • Beast Boy is RED
  • Cyborg is a FOUNDING member of the Justice League
  • Barbara Gordan ISN'T paralyzed anymore & is still/only was Batgirl
  • Tim Drake makes the FIRST Teen Titans
  • Krypton's destruction related to CLONING
  • NO Justice Society & Alan Scott is GAY
  • Batman has been active for about 5 years with 3-4 Robins?

WHAT???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
There are many more but I think this makes the point, many things regarding characters and the characters in general have been altered/erased. This leaves many fans of the characters angry, like me with Tim Drake's changes, and also confused, as previous comics have stated things that directly go against these changes (various #1 issues). Changes in-turn affect continuity as well, leaving many holes in character's histories and producing many questions for DC Comics. I would like to end it off by stating something I saw a fellow CBM.com user write when the New 52 was announced, "FULL reboot with no confusing continuity or leave it alone".

J'onn is just a supporting member of a team that sounds like it was born out of the 90s...

I feel like there's a lot that they could have done with J'onn - he's one of those immortal characters where there's always a story to tell - because compared to Batman, Superman, and GL - his past is kind of obscure.

If there was anything that could pull me back into reading comics, it would be giving J'onn a great role, making a storyline surrounding the Martian Manhunter instead of Batman and the Flash, or Superman and Wonder Woman getting it on...

But no dice.

If people have problems with these two things then they need to get over themselves. What was is not as important as what is. I've been reading quite a few different series since the launch of The New 52 and I've been confused by nothing. Now, if you just weren't happy with the writing, then that's another issue all together, but to nt like t because you are clinging to something that has changed then I don't know what to tell you. Open your mind a bit. All those older comics are still there to be read. Of those examples you gave, only the absence of WAlly and Donna are things I would understand if people weren't happy about and they still might pop up sometime. You don't know.

Who gives? If they wanted to keep everything the same then they wouldn't of done it in the first place. What's wrong with having Amanda Waller skinny. She was skinny in GL. OMFG Tim Drake wasn't Robin he was Red Robin that's so big even though he was still Batmans sidekick and adopted by him.

I agree with everything BarnaclePete and RedHood13 said. The New 52 has been awesome and is the only reason I got into comics.

I posted my problems with the New 52 a couple days ago. These are the obvious problems, that I don't blame someone for having; from the smaller changes to the big ones.

But we should look at the people like batmanmovie2012; If The New 52 got new readers thats a good thing. No way around that simple fact.

I think if you have a problem with NEW 52 then just stop reading the books. That is what I did. There is plenty of back stories available from DC, Marvel, & Image out there that no one should feel the need to read anything current they don't like.

@Tainted...dude, you're a dick! I kept poking at my screen trying to kill the gnat! LOL Anyway, I haven't picked up any of the new 52. I haven't seen anything that looks interesting enough to read them. I'm more a Marvel guy anyway, but I like some DC stuff too. Looks like we'll be headed for a whole new frickin "Crisis" in the next couple of years to fix this [frick] up of continutiy!

wow I didn't know about the Tim Drake thing but still thats confusing as hell that he is red robin but was never regular robin. It wasn't mention in Batman I don't think so I probably wouldn't have found that out I guess lol

My problem with the new 52 is that they didn't reboot wholesale on Hawkman for some reason and Superman of all titles is still weak. Superman is the new Aquaman, I don't think the time gap between Action Comics and Superman helps either

stop [frick]ing complaining! what is it going to do? and wally west gone? [frick]ING FINALLY!! I hated him, Barry is and always will be my Flash, also it was called a reboot for a reason, some things are gonna be different and not everyone will like it. I love the New 52 and I havn't had one dissapointing read. So suck it up princess and stop your Bitching.

Maybe I don't want to know the sexual preference of a comic book character, just like I don't care too know anybody else's sexual preference. That's private.

Anyway, I would think the homosexual readers wouldn't applaud it since the world is the way it is, and in the comic book world it's rarely ever mentioned, except when it's gratuitous and they're trying to stay 'with the times' or whatever they're bad marketing logic is. It's suppose to be an escape, sex just makes things complicated. There are trashy novels, movies, porn, or True Blood for that.

of course changes will rub some people the wrong way. if you are emotionally invested with these characters and stories, you may have an adverse reaction to some of these changes. the key is to keep moving. regardless of what changes, all it takes is a great creative team to make you see it in a fantastic and entertaining way.

@batmanmovie2012
that is awesome that these books brought you in, they did their job and there are more people supporting the medium.

@toco89
why can't escapism involve sex? learning alan scott's sexual preference isn't a bad thing. sexual preference, religion, and political standpoints, when done well, add different dimensions to a character. How this will be used later on, I don't know? but a clever writer can utilize that.

Wow, I have no idea how long this has been up but after reading I need to say Damn! I will Make myself the bad guy in my statement that the new 52 is to the DCU what apartheid was to Africa. It took beloved characters and didn't take a new take on them but made them completely different characters. The JSA was never meant to be young and hip. Hell they weren't young and hip when they were conceived. The lived through a hard time (WWII) in American history and brought to the modern heroes the wisdom of ages. They were mentors to those who sought out help. As for the Alan Scott being gay thing, that is the epitome of Hero by name only. He was mad gay and his daughter and gay son were washed away. Being that Blackest night happened still and Jade was a Huge challenge for Kyle... I'd love to know how his being gay supports continuity at all. It seems to me a gay character can't stand on his own to feet ( Marvels North Star excluded) With out the rich history of a character who has been straight since the golden age of comics. Also back to blackest night The Cyborg superman a member of the sinestro corps took part. How can this be when we have a superman that never died never spawning off the cybernetic madman? Half the black lanterns never even existed in the new 52. Yet the blackest night still transpired? I understand the noob comic readers defending their self righteous claim to the New 52, but be real, insulting the long time readers and fans to appease some trend readers who will be off with a new hobby in a few months is just insulting. I read the Red Lanterns only because as far as I've gotten it is in no way linked to any other book ( except the also drastically unchanged gl titles) and in my opinion even that book is coming up short. They made harley quinns outfit uber slutty while down playing the stripper appeal of power girls prior? Harley was never meant to be bimbo'ed out. That is my rant for all the keyboard warriors out there.

Peace
