EDITORIAL: Batman Villains... Just a bunch of Pussies?

Is Batman's rep as the ass-kicker of the DC Universe earned? Here's REALLY why Batman "always wins".

Editorial Opinion

There have been many user polls that have featured Batman in them lately and a lot of the time I will chime in with Batman always wins. Now I don’t really feel that way, but I got to thinking about that statement and have an idea on why most fans of Batman feel this way. None of Batman’s major foes are fighters. Allow me the opportunity to break down a couple of them for you. (This only includes Batman’s main villains although Deadshot and some others are cool and could match Batman these characters are in most of his stories.)

The Joker-

The Joker is Batman’s main rouge he is psychotically smart and always has a trick or two up his sleeve to make trouble for Batman. If you really look at him though he is not a big physical fighter, he is nowhere near close to Batman in fighting skill.

Two-Face-

Harvey Dent is another one of Batman’s foes that although very smart does not have the physical prowess or the fighting skills to keep up with Batman. Dent is more likely to flip his coin on whether or not to shoot the hostage or to let them live to challenge the Dark Knight’s Morals rather than a physical confrontation.

The Penguin-

Look at him...

Catwoman-

Catwoman could hold her own in a fight but is not that great of a fighter. She is more gifted in escaping situations. As well as being stealthy.

I know there are more that I could go over but these are the only ones I felt like doing.

When Batman goes toe to toe with a super powered being, he hardly stands a chance. What Batman brings to the table is his commanding presence, leadership, and a general hardcore mentality that while he has no super-powers, he believes he can still kick any meta-human's ass--and THAT confidence makes his enemies wonder...

After going through and analyzing the facts it looks as though yes Batman does win all the time…..but look who he is fighting! A skinny super pale weirdo, and indecisive attorney, a short fat man, and a stealthy cat.

CBMTrolls!
Road House!
Over.
Boom!

Ummmmmm....ok.....so...what about....

Ras Al Ghul
Clayface
Manbat
Bane
Killer Croc

Just to name a few. Unless you're just rehashing villains from movies, and not actually his comics. Keep in mind he killed Darkseid too...so, maybe you should do a bit more homework. ;-)

By the way, Superman could kill Batman EVERY time!

Ok, but the little fan thing of "Batman always wins" really doesn't just refer to his fighting skills does it? It just means that he will always find a way to come out on top and adapt to any situation and 9 times out of 10 that is how he is written. That and its not REALLY supposed to be taken too seriously. So yeah. Funny article though:)

Batman’s villains challenge the character in more ways than just physicality. He has plenty of villains that are a match for many in either universe. First you have to realize batman is still essentially a street fighter which puts him on the level of Captain America, Black Panther, Daredevil, Deathstroke, etc. His Rogues have the likes of Clayface, Killer Croc, Bane, Firefly, Freeze, and Ivy who constantly have him fighting a better opponent. We cannot forget his fabled training regimen. Just the League of assassins training would put him Above any hand to hand fighting style in both universes. As for his being human, for him to be a JLA member for as long as he has and constantly contribute to the group. That makes him one of the best situational strategic thinkers in both universes. Given the time to think he’s only second to Reed Richard in planning creative ways to handle a situation.
Having said that I don’t think batman could beat EVERYONE (he can still beat Superman). But to challenge the amount of ass he kicked in his career is ridiculous.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE ABLE TO FIGHT TO BE DANGEROUS.

Bamf7, lmao, do YOUR research. It took decades of Darkseid being a threat for Bats to conceive a weaponized delivery for the radiation lethal to Darkseids race, AND he was killed himself in the process.

wait but doesnt batman whup shivas ass in public enemies doesn't that indicate hes a realkly good fighter same thing happens when he fights darkseids minions and grundy and superman and amazo...also killer croc is huge and batman whups him and deathstroke alot of times...

CorndogBurglar - 12/29/2010, 10:12 AM
Batman may not have a whole lot of villains that are physical threats, but he's fought MANY other people that aren't his own villains, including Superman, and won.

So i think that says everything.

Harvey is my all time favorite villain, and I got this from his wiki page...

"During the Batman: Face to Face story arc, it is revealed that Batman has trained Dent extensively in hand-to-hand combat and detective work, enhancing his already proficient talent in both. He also tends to carry with him a large assortment of conventional weaponry, including guns, knives, rocket launchers, and poison gases, along with being an expert marksman."

So, he's no pussy. Sure, he trys to avoid physical confrontation(because thats the logical thing to do), but he knows how to fight when he has to.

I get what you're saying in this article though, many of Batmans villains fight physiologically, as opposed to Batmans more physical style.
TheMyth
TheMyth - 12/29/2010, 10:26 AM
Corndog, I don't think it says much that he beat Supes. He did so by research and preparation to create a weapon that would allow him to do so. This is something Reed Richards, Tony Stark, or Hank Pym could conceive as easily as Bats did while others in DC already had, like Luthor.

I think this editorial fails to account for Batman's origin and is only fixated on his current portal.

Batman first appeared in 'Detective Comics #27'. The emphasis is detective. Batman started a crime solver with some decent hand to hand combat skills. Post "The Dark Knight" the character was elevated to dealing in more intense combat and it was cemented in the Tim Burton version and sealed into our brains.

Lacking in every film and television version, albeit the Bruce Timm version, is the throw back to his detective roots, his intelligence. Batman and Luthor are only a hairs difference; both have vast intellect.

Honestly fans have been trying to reconcile these differences for years. This editorial is nothing new or fresh or some brilliant break through in the Batman code.

Given the changes with Batman in comics currently moving towards the 'Batman, Inc' model of a franchise with an open relationship with Bruce Wayne financing Batman's operation, I think Morrison is making a solid effort to reconcile Batman the combat expert and Batman the detective.

lmao I wrote this kinda of how Batman got his reputation of winning all the time. In most of his stories he fights the people I listed. I am not saying he could not beat all the Heros/Villain everyone has mentioned but look at what he deals with most stories. for the record I am a Batman/ DC guy but I am being objective.

Magic8, I can't think of anything more pathetic than some one who acts as though their opinion, especially on an art form, is divinely inspired and represents all that's right.

Seriously, your a judgmental douchebag.
