It is not a hidden fact by today that Bucky Barnes has found his end in the hands of Sin (in her Skadi form) during the events of the Fear Itself storyline, and it seems that this has been established by the release of the 7.1 issue of the title which features a special memorial to the former sidekick of Captain America. However, as a teaser was released some times before today, there's a hint that the Winter Soldier - or at least another person taking up the mantle - is still active! With a thanks to a Bleeding Cool, check out a further report regarding an announcing advertisement found at the back of Fear Itself #7.1 below:

Today Fear Itself #7.1 is published. Which features the memorial service for Bucky Barnes – Captain America’s sidekick in the war, who was revived as Soviet weapon The Winter Soldier and then became Captain America when the original was thought dead. During the issue you discover that the Winter Soldier identity, at least, is alive and kicking. And at the back there is an ad for a new Marvel ongoing series by Ed Bubaker and Butch Guice starting next year, The Winter Soldier. But who will be taking on the identity, the costume and the guns, well, you’ll have to read the comic to find out.

Could Bucky Barnes still be alive after all, or is this Winter Soldier an all-new character? We could just wait for the book to be released next year to find out, but sound off your thoughts below as usual!

SuperSomething616 You posted the teaser (I did give a link to it up there), but here's the announcing advertisement...which should be fine, I guessed. But we'll see later hoe it goes. :)

Does Brubaker do anything else beside Captain America characters. He writes Captain America, Cap and Bucky, Secret Avengers til Ellis came on and now this. Is he just in love with these two characters? I think they should have allowed Bucky to have been dead for a few years so eventually people want the character back. Even Hickman is keeping Johnny Blaze dead while he is write the Fantastic books. I will skip this since I never read the Bucky Cap stories or anything with his Winter Soldier persona

Killing off a character (if you can prove that they actually died) more often than not isn't permanent. Sometimes it lasts for decades, like Bucky, the first time (if he's actually dead) and Barry Allen. I think it's up to the writers to make their 'return' interesting/important.

Yeah, Marvel's comics have been really [frick]ed up because of things like this. Marvel is too busy killing off and bringing back characters while DC is starting fresh.

@Pepe "dead should stay dead"???

so does that rule apply to the DCU as well??

I don't think they should have killed him in the first place. They had a perfect way for Steve to become Cap again.

0TheQuestion0- Of course we knew it was coming. But it doesn't make it any less deceiving when they choose to prove to us just how stupid they intend to remain.

Okay, so Bucky is "dead" for what, a month? And he is already announced to be returning. That's just LAZY. Not even bothering to let the body get cold. No point in pretending it's someone else. It's not like the title "Winter Soldier" is so well known and honored in a "The world NEEDS a Winter Soldier" kind of way that someone else would bother to make themselves look identical to Barnes, down to hairstyle and cybernetic arm.

Marvel has to get Steve Rogers back in the Captain America suit so as to not confuse new readers brought in by the films, but there were classier ways to do it than this.

@HelaGood - In what sense does dead come back in real life?

WHO cares... i for one never really cared for Bucky's resurrection in the first place. and then now they killed him, then...this, the return of his new super hero identity...ugh!!

just give us great stuff like Civil War again, marvel...

For the last time: Bucky wasn't killed off. He was NEVER dead. Last you saw of him he was near death, then it was infered he was dead by the Widow and Fury. In fact he was never dead, just near death. They set this one up good. His receiving the infinity serum (or whatever that $hit is called that Fury has in him) sets him up in the VERY long run to take over for Fury at some point. Well done.

This differs from the Human Torch because in the Torches case they were selling that issue as his "death" issue. They used it as a cheap marketing ploy. You never saw him die either but Marvel was running with it as a death issue with black bag and all.

In Bucky's case they never advertised it or used it to sell a book. It was a surprise to all in the Fear Itself storyline.
