GODZILLA's Gareth Edwards To Helm STAR WARS Spin-Off; 2016 Release Date Announced

Following the success of Godzilla both critically and financially, it should perhaps come as no surprise to learn that director Gareth Edwards has already lined up his next project. He'll direct a Star Wars spin-off, while a writer and release date have also been announced!

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year's smash hit Godzilla.

"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm, said Edwards.

Gary Whittas screenwriting credits include 2010s The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

This story was first broken by a trade, before being made official minutes later. It's exciting news for fans of Edwards' after Godzilla, although the fate of that franchise is now unknown. Either way, add a Star Wars spin-off to the already amazing moviegoing year which is 2016! A title reveal and casting news surely now can't be too far behind. Who do you guys hope it focuses on?

Hm, well that may be a good choice. I think they wanted to have a spin-off between each main episode, so this could possibly be out in 2016/2017.

So I take it we won't be seeing a Godzilla sequel for a while, or Gareth won't be directing it.

Happy Edwards is directing the spin-off (that gives me some hope) as I find the idea of Disney over-saturating the market and dampening the impact of the saga to be terrifying.

What worries me though is that Gary Whitta also wrote After Earth

@Ezio Don't get me wrong, Godzilla was a good film. And that's basically all I can say, a good film. The movie went down-hill after Joe died and switched over to Ford. Now ATJ gave the role his best, I could tell, but the character was boring. Really not a character that's interesting enough to spend for most of the film.

Unlike a lot of people, my main problem wasn't the lack of Zilla, though. I didn't mind, but when we replace Zilla with the 2-d main characters, that's where my problem comes in. Even the MUTO's had a larger focus then GodZilla.

6.7-7/10 for me. It was worth the viewing.

Atomic Breath FTW!

I'm ok with this, just wish they would return to a May release date, and still wondering who the spin-off will be about.

After watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier, I would absolutely love if the Russo brothers would one day direct a Star Wars movie.

@Ezio Yeah, he isn't a bad director. Far from it. I hope it's Boba Fett or Yoda. Though I prefer Fett.
