TVLine has revealed that Carol Kane (Girls) has joined the cast of the first season of Gotham as Gertrud Kapelput, the mother of Oswald Cobblepot (a.k.a. The Penguin, played in this series by Robin Lord Taylor). Fans of the comic books will know that this character played a major role in the villains early years within the pages of Gregg Hurwitz's Penguin: Pain and Prejudice series. Whether some of that story will be adapted remains to be seen, but they would be smart to turn to it for inspiration. The site also has a brief character description, stating that she will be a "proud and faded beauty with delusions of grandeur." Why is it a spoiler that she's playing the Penguin's mother? We already KNOW the Penguin is in this series, and as to whether this is an indication of the show adapting a specific comic story, that's little more than speculation.

This is pretty damn far from a spoiler, guys.

The Cobblepots are one family we should expect to see in some capacity. But I am curious to see where this show goes. Not to mention 3 different networks with their own DCU.

I swear to the heavens you Fan Boy whelps will be the end of the very things you covet. Every word uttered about this show has nothing but praise heaped upon it and yet because it doesn't fit the so neatly tailored vision of a cartoon character you think you solely have ownership to, you mock it's existence.

Must I remind you of a time when we, the huddled hunched over masses who dwelt in the dark shadows of comic book stores and hobby shops, could not even fathom these films and television shows ever even existing; much less prospering? This is The Golden Age of Geekdom my friends. Now stop complaining so damn much, sit down, eat your popcorn and ENJOY IT!

I mean if you are going to do a show about Gotham then just like you expect to see the Wayne's you should expect to see the Cobblepotts. I think this show is honestly going to give fans of Batman a much greater appreciation for villains other than the ones who have been in movies.

Other than in the movies? Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, Poison Ivy, and they're talking about Mr. Freeze. They've all been in the movies. All Gotham is doing is [frick]ing up their origins. The only villain that's announced so far that hasn't been in a movie, is Fish Mooney, and she's a made-up character, played by the worst actress they could find...

All of the DC shows look awesome bar this...

Should have gone the NYPD BLUE/CSI/SOUTHLAND route and had a real feel about it instead of all this pre villain crap.

Could be okay but should have been fantastic.

I would like this show to be tonally different from shows like Arrow and Smallville. I blame 10 excruciatingly long years of Smallville for having an instinctual disdain for Arrow simply because it reminds me of the former. That is totally unfair of me and unfair to all of the hard working people putting their all into the new show, a show many people seem to love, but it is what it is. I can't overcome it, no matter how hard I try. If Gotham is tonally different, it will make it much easier for me to accept it as its own thing.
