Kevin Feige Says Marvel Won't Be "Swayed" Into Making A Female Led Superhero Movie

Making it clear that Marvel Studios will always make diversity a priority, Kevin Feige also points out that they won't be swayed by any online backlash to change how they do things. He also shares his thoughts on the female Thor and Falcon-Captain America, and whether we'll see them in the movies...

Talking to ScreenCrush, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked about the backlash (a result of the lack of female characters) which followed the release of the first cast photo from Star Wars Episode VII . The site mentioned that a number of actresses had since been cast in that movie, and with Captain Marvel a long rumoured project for Marvel, they asked if Feige is worried about similar backlash. "I don’t think J.J. Abrams or the ‘Star Wars’ people — I have no idea — but my guess is that they were not swayed by any backlash. We’re not going to be swayed by the backlash. We’re going to keep bringing the movies out the way we envision it and the way we believe in it — and that includes diversity in all of the active films. And certainly, on our development slate of many of the characters — some of which you just named — and always being conscious of that. The great thing for us is the comics have been conscious of that through the decades and have been rather pioneering in that over the years."

When they then brought up the recent changes made to Captain America and Thor in the comic books, Feige responded positively to the alterations, before addressing the possibility that the same could one day happen on film. "Well, look, listen, as you know, that’s happened before in the comics. It’s getting a lot of attention because they’ve just done it, but both of those things have happened in the past. So, it’s always that’s part of the fun. There’s always that chance to surprise people or to switch up — a number of people have worn the Cap’ costume. A number of people have lifted Mjölnir. So, that’s all fodder for future storytelling." Though the response to Doctor Strange and another Thor or Iron Man movie being announced will likely be met very positively next week at Comic-Con, it would be a great shame if a Black Panther or Captain Marvel movie aren't part of Phase 3. What do you think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Do it Feige, before another studio gets to her.

What diversity, exactly? It's almost the same thing in the comics, with the exception of Nick Fury.

It's going to be 6 - 2 for the Avengers with a male majority.

Lol, what diversity. Pretty much everyone is white and its male dominant.

DC is doing it right so far with their lineup.

[frick] Black Panther. [frick] Doctor Strange. Make a Captain Marvel movie.

@lapress

So that's what, 7-1 for the Avengers with a White majority?
Ha, well it's still not as bad as it could be.

I personally would like to see a female lead film after seeing Scarlett in Cap 2.
That's the first time I actually LIKED Widow, but maybe they never gave her so much depth before. She was layered and pure dynamite in that film.

They should introduce a female Thor into the MCU after A3 (also around the time I expect Hemsworth to be done with the role). It's a replacement for Hemsworth, the Thor name/film series already has a heap of fans (avoiding the risk of going in with uncertainty with the size of the fanbase), bringing in a new actress is cheaper, it'll add diversity, and it'll mix things up.

Forget Yvonne, she's great and all but Anna Torv would be amazing as Ms Marvel.

Sorry Feige but a female superhero films IS NEEDED. Captain Mavel is just as good a hero as Iron Man or Thor ad more prevalent imo than Black widow. Make it happen. Swayed??? We need one. It's time for one. You have Joss Whedon who knows female characters take adbavantahe of tht and beat the other studios to the first female superhero film. Training Harvard strong female film charter in kill bill, Whedon gave us Buffy, Besson's have is La Femme Nikita an now Lucy, Fincher have us Lisberh Salander in GWTDT etc. Come on Marvel. Feige tryna sound tough an shit by not being swayed but it comes off as "stop badgering us and we don't really want to make one". I love Marvel and they have the power and ability To make one

Trust when I tell you Marvel is looking CLOSELY at Lucy's opening numbers.

@ckal

You could've said that in the past but it's hardly acceptable to say that now and I think Lucy may prove you wrong, hopefully it will.
Look at Hunger Games, comedies like The Heat, Bridesmaids. Say what you want about the Resident Evil or Underworld movies but the one thing they do accomplish is making money.

The whole "women films don't do well at the box office" is mostly a shit, almost strawman argument that people have seemed to, out of nowhere, hopped on.

F*ck that, they're doing a movie w/ a talking racoon and tree yet won't give a solo movie to a strong female lead. What a joke.

Sorry. It IS the most diversity comic film (and one of the best)

Of course a female superhero movie is "needed", just like male superhero movies are, it's proven that women are a huge consumer at the box office and especially in recent years.

Klone
Klone - 7/21/2014, 4:26 PM
Well I'm not a massive fan of Ms. Marvel, but from what I gather her casting is far less specific than one like WW. Get a pale, blond, widely considered beautiful American actress or actress that can put on a convincing American accent, make she is good at acting, put in some training and tada. All set.

Doing a solo female film isn't hard. Introduce the character in a known-film like Black Widow in IM2 and then give them more screen-time and hopefully they can get their own movie.
MrPrime
MrPrime - 7/21/2014, 4:26 PM
If this was DC they would get destroyed but yet it's marvel, a studio who have one of the most diverse teams ever featuring all white males.

Good for Fiege though, other people shouldn't force you to add other characters in to your own vision.

Alice Eve, Yvonne, etc. is there really going to be much dispute to those individuals do a good job? Whereas with WW there's tons of doubt and arguing when people toss out shit like Carano or Alexander.

@MrBlackJack, Big NO to that idea. Let Hemsworth grow into the role like Hugh Jackman did as Wolverine. He said he's down to keep playing Thor as long as the audience wants him to. Plus I think an older Chris Hemsworth would make Thor cooler.
