BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY To Stay At #1 During Labor Day Weekend
Guardians of the Galaxy opened at #1, took a couple of weeks off, and then regained the top spot. Well, the James Gunn helmed sequel now looks set to rule the Labor Day holiday in North America as Rocket Raccoon and the gang take aim at a very impressive fifth weekend...
This summer has not been good in North America in terms of box office takings, but that's working well for Guardians of the Galaxy as it looks set to take advantage of a quiet August by storming to the #1 spot again this weekend. The movie has been pegged as the clear winner of the Labor Day weekend, and after taking $3.5 million today, it looks set to earn $19 million in total during its fifth week of release. The Marvel Studios movie faces little competition from The November Man (starring Pierce Brosnan) which will open in second with $15 million. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles meanwhile is set to take third place with around $13 million. Variety's report doesn't even mention Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, so that one is sitting firmly in "flop" territory right now. Guardians of the Galaxy should have $277 million on Labor Day, and it has already topped Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the year's highest grossing release. It should also be the first to surpass $300 million, and saves 2014 from being the first year that North America hasn't had a movie which has earned over $300 million since 2000. What are you seeing this weekend?
