James Gunn Responds To GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Becoming 2014's Highest Grossing Movie

James Gunn Responds To GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Becoming 2014's Highest Grossing Movie

Guardians of the Galaxy has ended the summer as 2014's highest grossing movie in North America after taking the #1 spot again this weekend, and director James Gunn has taken to Twitter today to both thank fans and reveal why he believes the movie has been such a success.

Many of us had a feeling that Guardians of the Galaxy would be something special, but it seems fair to say that we couldn't have guessed just how special the latest movie from Marvel Studios would end up being. It's not only the best reviewed superhero movie of 2014, but now also the highest grossing in North America (box office analysts believe that it will finish its run with upwards of $300 million). Writer/director James Gunn took to Facebook today to share his thoughts on its success.

To quote my favorite little monstrosity, "Oh... Yeah."

And although io9 may be right, that people like the movie because it's funny, I like to believe it's because WE GAVE A SHIT. You aren't numbers to us. You deserve to be given something we the creators believe in and that isn't just seeking a big opening weekend. I love my characters, I care about the quality of the movie, and Marvel was cool enough to let us take some risks.

Hopefully, THAT'S the lesson - that we'll see more spectacle movies coming out of Hollywood that the filmmakers actually believe in, and that take risks, NOT just a bunch of superhero or space movies trying to be funny.

Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio del Toro, Guardians of the Galaxy is out now! What did you guys think of the movie?

Marvel needs to get it too. They dropped the ball on IM2 and TDW by being rocky with the directors. But if a few mishaps are the catalyst for Marvel taking a few lessons in humility, then so be it.

I'm still struggling to decide if I like The Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy more. Both are amazing films yet both are so different. I guess that's a reason to love Marvel; each film is its own thing and is unique.

Iron Man 1, Guardians and The Winter Soldier are the only enjoyable Marvel movies. Every other movie released under their banner has been dogshiiit. And yes, I also mean Avengers. What a crock of shiiiit.

We'll said.
Seems like Marvel just "gets it."
That every story, big and small, is about the people and relationships that occupy it.
Saw this 3 times. Been a loooooong time since I've seen a movie twice in a theater.
Actually only watched 3 movies this summer, 2 other than Guardians.
Haven't had this much fun in years.
Truly a cinematic event in my life.

Couldn't care less about any haters!

Right, that's why I pull for all CBMs to do well, DC/Marvel, don't care...whichever studio makes a good movie(s), the others need to take notice, and hopefully up their games too...well, maybe Sony still won't, but you know...haha

So more movies like GOTG and less movies like T:TDW? Good.

James Gunn is the one who made this film so unique and special, and I'm glad it paid off.
