James Gunn Responds To GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Becoming 2014's Highest Grossing Movie
Guardians of the Galaxy has ended the summer as 2014's highest grossing movie in North America after taking the #1 spot again this weekend, and director James Gunn has taken to Twitter today to both thank fans and reveal why he believes the movie has been such a success.
Many of us had a feeling that Guardians of the Galaxy would be something special, but it seems fair to say that we couldn't have guessed just how special the latest movie from Marvel Studios would end up being. It's not only the best reviewed superhero movie of 2014, but now also the highest grossing in North America (box office analysts believe that it will finish its run with upwards of $300 million). Writer/director James Gunn took to Facebook today to share his thoughts on its success.
To quote my favorite little monstrosity, "Oh... Yeah."
And although io9 may be right, that people like the movie because it's funny, I like to believe it's because WE GAVE A SHIT. You aren't numbers to us. You deserve to be given something we the creators believe in and that isn't just seeking a big opening weekend. I love my characters, I care about the quality of the movie, and Marvel was cool enough to let us take some risks.
Hopefully, THAT'S the lesson - that we'll see more spectacle movies coming out of Hollywood that the filmmakers actually believe in, and that take risks, NOT just a bunch of superhero or space movies trying to be funny.
Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio del Toro, Guardians of the Galaxy is out now! What did you guys think of the movie?
