Netflix Buys Rights To GOTHAM In Huge Deal Ahead Of Season One Premiere
Gotham will air on Fox, but as soon as season one comes to a close, the Batman prequel will head straight to Netflix in a deal which has seen the online streaming service pay a seven figure sum for each instalment. Hit the jump for details and specifics on when you'll be able to watch online.
Deadline reports that Netflix have reached a deal with Warner Bros. and Fox to exclusively feature Gotham on the online streaming service once series has finished airing on TV. This is actually the first time such an agreement has been made before a single episode of a show has aired, a sign perhaps that everyone involved are confident that Gotham will be a success. Netflix have actually paid $1.75 million for each one, and it's expected to debut there in September 2015, before the possible season two premiere (Fox have obviously not committed to this yet). This isn't just for the US either, so you can look forward to reliving the Batman prequel wherever you may be in the world once the first run of episodes wrap up next year.
"While we typically license our programming country by country, we have licensed this very special series to Netflix on a multi-territory basis," WBWTD president Jeffrey R. Schlesinger said in a statement today. "Netflix is a perfect home for Gotham following its initial broadcast in each respective country, giving Netflix subscribers the opportunity to catch-up prior to the new season, whether they’re already fans or discovering it for the first time." Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, adds: "Gotham is the most anticipated new series of the fall season and we are thrilled to offer it to our members around the world. The Batman origin story is sure to have massive global appeal so it is fitting that, along with Warner Television, we have created a new model for distributing a show that international and domestic audiences will love."
