Epic New Concept Art For Bryan Singer's X-MEN 3 Features Alternate 'Phoenix' Designs

Before Superman Returns caught his attention, Bryan Singer was set to helm X-Men 3 (a.k.a. X-Men: The Last Stand). The job ultimately went to Brett Ratner, but based on these concepts for Jean Grey/The Phoenix, we really missed out on something special...

Thanks to Universo X-Men, we have some concept art from what Bryan Singer's take on "The Dark Phoenix Saga" would have looked like had he not chosen to helm Superman Returns instead of X-Men 3. Writer Simon Kinberg has expressed his regret over how the movie turned out (especially as it's one of his favourite story arcs), and it seems clear that Singer's version would have been far superior to what Brett Ratner came up with in the short amount of time he had to prepare when he boarded the project following Matthew Vaughn's last-minute departure. These designs and the level of destruction are vastly superior to what we ended up getting in the final movie, and I strongly recommend heading on over to the site by clicking on the link below for more concept art!

Damn. Why'd Singer leave to make a mediocre film. Imagine if he had stayed.

Now that this movie is wiped from continuity, another chance must be given.

Both Singer and Vaughn were originally going to use thr Hellfire Club in X3. From what I'd heard the story from First Class took some elements of the original X3 story and twisted them.

He should have never left! I know making a Superman movie would have been a dream come true. But the X-Men series was his baby and he abandoned it! I'm just glad he came back and gave us X-Men DOFP.

First Class and DOFP were great, but it's bittersweet because now Shaw and Frost are dead so we can't have a proper Dark Phoenix Saga adaptation. However, in the new continuity Mastermind is still alive and well.

@santoanderson

I like some of his work (Rush Hour) and Hercules was okay. He produced Horrible Bosses and it's sequel. I think he should stay away from big franchises though.

X3 is okay. There, I said it. I wish it was great though instead of just a serviceable action movie. At least we got to see the danger room.

So in other words, had Singer stayed on we would have had a prettier version of the piece of shit that was X-Man Last Stand?

Not exactly something that would have meant greatness. You can polish a turd all you want, but it's still going to be a turd.

its crap!
PHOENIX should've gotten her 3-film EPIC storyline, just look at the cartoon series, so much episodes, fr the space shuttle to, muir island, to lilandra, brotherhood of mutants, etc... its huge! would've been a good 3-parter film franchise!
instead they make her such a secondary character!...very disappointed, Sorry!
Who Agrees With Me Here?... @ me please...

Maybe we'll see a Phoenix manifestation in X-Men Apocalypse with young Jean Grey.

Doesn't look all that different from what we got. I have my own opinion as to why X3 wasn't as well-received as the rest. (Dark Phoenix is a really dull storyline, especially without the Shi'ar)

[frick] Singer and Ratner because Singer never got Cyclop's character right in the first place same thing with Storm.

It's funny that an article like this just popped up right after
I purchased the (Uncanny X-Men: Volume 2)"Phoenix Saga" Graphic Novel. I strongly agree with those who are placing major emphasis on the Shi'ar empire being introduced. I would also love it if they used the Shi'ar empire as the alien beings responsible for equipping Apocalypse with his alien tech. That way hey could build up the hype for them to be featured fully fleshed out within the (hopefully) upcoming rebooted Phoenix saga by Fox.

They could cover Sue Storm in flames the following year in Rise of the Silver Surfer but Brett Ratner couldn't break the budget to cover Famke in flames? You DICK!
