New STAR WARS Movies Won't Adhere To Any Specific Genre Says Lucasfilm Exec

We all know what the standard Star Wars film will likely consist of, but according to Lucasfilm's Vice President of development, future movies won't necessarily stick to the classic set format. Are they about to take some cues from Guardians of the Galaxy? Read on for details...

Star Wars Episode VII will continue the story which kicked off in A New Hope (how much the new trilogy will link back to the prequels remains to be seen), but it sounds as if both this and the planned spin-offs won't be forced to adhere to the classic Star Wars formula. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal Lucasfilm's Vice President of development Kiri Hart told them that none of the upcoming movies will "rigidly" adhere to any established film genres as, "I think there are boundaries [to what defines Star Wars], but we don't want to rigidly define them. It's obviously not slapstick comedy, but there's room for many different stories and genres that still feel like Star Wars." This is interesting and something many fans have suspected since rumours started doing the rounds that Zack Snyder was being eyed to helm a spin-off which would have focused on a group of samurai-like Jedis. What this could mean is that Boba Fett will be very different than, say, Han Solo or Yoda. That's no bad thing! What do you guys think?

I think he means that a Han Solo movie could be more "light" or funny than a movie about Fett, which would seem to not really be meant to be comedic in tone.

I wouldn't read too much into what he's saying...

But if A yoda movie is a gag reel-o-Rama I would be incredibly disappointed, as would everyone else.

I actually hope they all are somewhat different in tone and storytelling. That's why I think it's important to get different directors and writers for each one. So they can be unique, yet still be set in the same Cinematic Universe.

Yeah the Star Wars style/tone can encompass many different types of stories. For example you can make a bounty hunter movie that is the exact same style/tone of the previous star wars films and it will feel naturally part of that universe but if you change that tone/style than it will feel separate from the universe.

Star Wars is one of the few series that manages to so perfectly blend a number of tones and styles - changing that would be an idiotic move.

How was there an inference to GOTG from that article??? I'm not seeing any correlation in speculating on whether it will take cues from that movie.

Star Wars is a space opera, simple as that. You can change a ton of things around that, but the central concept is that it's a fantasy space opera. That's pretty much the reason why people hate the prequels: they tried to be political thrillers, and dark/edgy/'mature' modernizations of the originals. That's not Star Wars.

Star Wars is space fantasy. Not science fiction. But with that said, I like it. :)

This is science fact though. ;)

And sometimes, science fact can be pretty cool.

"The classic Star Wars formula" ? What is that ?

It's gonna be a sci-fi/action/space movie alright, I don't expect anything else. If Star Wars has a classic formula, that's it, ad they're not going away from that anytime soon.

Unless they want to movie to bomb.

Star Wars is a fantasy with sci-fi elements. it never stuck to a single genre... but I think it would be silly to stray from the set format for the main series...

It could be fun to experiment a little with the spin offs though

Star Wars projects should maintain the tone of original trilogy,it's good for all ages.
Not overly kid friendly or adult themed.

As long as it's tense and dark or tense and really dark,I'm not too bothered.

@Thelastdalek
Only when the backs are up against the wall does it get interesting.
It is a war after all.

Look at Iraq with the terrorists, thats what the Sith/Empire/Baddies should be like darkness wise.
Only my opinion though :)

Can we please get the Tales of the Jedi series going. Nomi Sunrider and the Quel Droma boys? Those were some of the best comics that Dark Horse had.
