RUMOR: Lucasfilm Said To Be Developing A Trio Of Standalone OBI-WAN KENOBI Movies

Not a trilogy, three standalone spin-off movies focusing on the popular Jedi during different periods of his life. Though strictly a rumour at this point, we have details on the direction of these movies and the plans to bring back fan-favourite character Qui-Gon Jinn. Hit the jump for details!

We know that at least two Star Wars spin-offs are on the way (Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank are attached to two), so it's inevitable that the rumour mill is going overboard on which characters they will focus on. A name which continuously seems to pop up though is Obi-Wan Kenobi. According to Cinelinx - a site unproven in terms of scoops, but one which doesn't have a bad track record or poor reputation as far as we know - Lucasfilm and Disney are developing THREE standalone movies! "First up, they are not talking about an Obi-Wan spin-off movie but a trilogy of Obi-Wan movies," their source claims. "I need to stress that these movies are not connected. They aren't part of a story arc but 3 separate Obi-Wan adventures set between Episodes III and IV."

We're at that point where there are so many Star Wars rumours doing the rounds, you can just about guarantee that 99% are fake, but Obi-Wan has been mention by a variety of sites now. As for three standalone movies, I'd say it's far more likely that they're simply mulling over three different ideas and will pick on, but here's what they have so far: "One set completely on Tatooine and two where Obi-Wan travels elsewhere in the Galaxy. Qui-Gon Jinn is very much present in these stories.  So too is Owen Lars. Several characters from the Clone Wars T.V show would make an appearance.  There would be flashbacks to Obi-Wan fighting in the Clone Wars." You would think that Lucasfilm would want to avoid the prequels, but if quality stories can be told which are set during that time period, what's the harm in returning? What do you guys think?

I guess there's a lot of room for story using the 20 year period between III and IV. It kind of ruins the idea of "hermit" Obi-Wan if he's running around doing badass Jedi stuff for years in between. In IV you get the idea that he's been out of the game for awhile.

Ok I can deal with that,Imean at first when I heard the three star wars apin offs I was hoping for Han solo,bobs fett,and Yoda.Didnt really care for an obi wan spin off and was hoping that the rumors of such a film would die at some point.Then I hear this shit about a trio of obi wan films and said Noooooooooo!but then I calmed down after I read the article.in all honesty tho one obi wan film set between episode 3 and 4 shouldn't be all bad right?Even tho the character should be put in episode 7

Nope. First of all, the prequels focused on him quite a lot, and second, even one single stand-alone film should be enough.

Just one stand alone film would be enough IMO. I'd rather have them make the KOTOR canon again and have them develop a KOTOR movie. Just please don't let The Old Republic MMO be canon.

Wait, three periods of his life?! So maybe the first one is between Ep I and II, the second is right after Ep III and the third is a few years before Ep IV.

@netmantriplesec, don't be a dilettante. If it was ever about art, then that stopped in the early 80s.

@NetmanTripleSec

It's a rumor from a relatively unknown site (to me anyway). Take it with a grain of salt. I'd buy that they're doing one film with Obi though.

I don't agree, but more time with the character could make him interesting. No?

@TexasTwoFace

I agree with your stance on milking. It's a huge franchise they paid kinda a lot of money for. And star wars is a franchise that needs to pander to its audience. And that is why Disney is a perfect match.

"But three movies starring the same character set over a period if time is still a trilogy. I don't know why someone would try to make that distinction"

It comes across as more a trilogy the way Indiana Jones was. Same guy, three adventures, which can be viewed independently of each other. Not one co tinuous story. So, more likes Jones than the traditional star wars trilogy.

@Deusexsponge, eh...everyone skims sometime.

@Pr0fess0rCha0s, not really since they set him up, admittedly horribly, at the end of rots to train Kenobi to become a ghost after death. Presumably, he would be one himself in these.
