Sony May Reboot And Recast SPIDER-MAN With SINISTER SIX; VENOM Movie Reportedly Scrapped

Following yesterday's reports of Sony negotiating with Marvel to add Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has now been revealed that the Sinister Six will possibly serve as a reboot with a new actor playing Spidey, while Venom may have once again been scrapped...

Though The Amazing Spider-Man 3 no longer has a release date, there's still clearly a lot going on behind-the-scenes at Sony Pictures when it comes to this character. The ever reliable Badass Digest confirm that they too have heard about plans to possibly incorporate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (if you missed that story yesterday, more details can be found by clicking here), but that is actually one of THREE different ideas curently being passed around.

The site claims to have been told that, "Sony is going to soft reboot Spider-Man with The Sinister Six, having a new actor playing a Spidey who works with the villains The Dirty Dozen style to take down a larger threat." This actually sounds similar to the Ultimate Six story arc from a few years back and would make sense, though recasting Andrew Garfield when he still has another picture left on his contract doesn't. The other plan? "To put Spider-Man on the shelf for four or five years and see if they can develop any of the side characters into their own franchises." This one seems more likely in some ways, especially as Sinister Six has taken the release date previously held by The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and a female-led spin-off is also in the works.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when a character like Spidey needs to be benched after two mediocre movies though. The site adds that they're not sure whether all or any of these will come to pass, but changes are definitely in store. Oh, and one more thing for you to mull over; Venom is said to be "functionally dead again," giving everyone who said "It'll never get made!" something to boast about. How do you guys feel about this news? Sound off with your thoughts below.

[frick] Spiderman working with the Sinister Six. I like the soft reboot idea, but not like that.

I'm sorry, but if they reboot Spidey again it would be best to do it under the MCU.

@KingTravis

Was that ever confirmed?? I've been saying the same. They said he signed a multi million dollar contract to play Spidey up to 2020.

Way more opportunity to screw up exactly the same way Raimi's 3rd film did aka: villain overload syndrome - with Spidey VS the Sinister Six, as they'll be trying to cram in more than one villain in a film (more like 2 and introducing a 3rd).

FFS get Spidey OFF the big screen before Sony kills the franchise again. Spidey's villain portfolio (Like Batman's) is crying out for big-budget TV episodes where you could feature all the villains independantly or together in limited fashion without trying to sew it all together in some convoluted storyline.

I was really looking forward to Venom/Carnage though. *takes off hat*

1. Venom/Carnage is not scrapped.

2. The Sinister Six does NOT need Andrew's physical performance as Spider-Man, just his voice.

3. Put this in Fan Fic, that way Doopie can draw pictures of Devin Faraci pulling scoops out of his rectum.

I wonder of Sony ever thought of making a deal with Fox for Spider-Man? I actually wouldn't mind that if things couldn't work out with the MCU somehow.

It's not "villain overload syndrome", it's Terrible Writing Syndrome.

This is kind of ridiculous, Amazing Spider-Man 2 made 700 million plus Disc based video and download sales and they consider it failure? They really should not try to do so much so fast if they want to make more money, not recast or cancel other character movies that will succeed.

I gotta agree here, I was watching TASM2's bonus features on Blu-Ray the other day and Garfield's stuntman did a lot of his work for him. It makes more sense if Wpidey was only supposed to show up in costume than full face and all.

WOW....feeds that MCU speculations...BIG TIME....

@TheRationalNerd They cant. They own a license, NOT the rights. Marvel sold them exclusive rights to it, but they cannot sell it. AMC MOvie talk did a thing on this last weekend and Campea goes into great detail if you want to check it out...Same logic could apply to why we are not seeing FF/Xmen crossovers talked about being a sure thing...they own the licenses not rights. Like Windows...and you know how MS holds onto MANY strings...like you cant sell your copy of windows to me

While Id never want to see X-Men in the hands of Disney, at this point Id love for a new studio to take over Spidey. Sony hasn't done anything good with the character in a decade and clearly have no clue wtf they are doing now

They could always cast someone else, if I understand correctly, movie contracts aren't a two way street. An actor could just not be asked back for a role, but if Andrew is asked back, he's obligated to come back. It could be a different case for him in particular though.

Ohhhh ok, well yeah if it was on ET there must be some truth to it I suppose. And yeah, they could honestly swap him over if they wanted. But many MCU fans will want a hardcore reboot.

@SKOne the point isn't that it made 700Mil, the problem Sony is having with the results is that it didn't make as much as they expected. Spider-man has been on a steep decline domestically ever since the first Spider-man, so it's clear that with the rise of other characters, the US/Canada and even the world large have started to lose interest in Spider-man. If the movies continue down that trend, it will be dangerously close to the "not making any money" territory. They also spent nearly $200 Million on the marketing for the movie, so they were clearly banking on it making 1 Billion+ at the box office.

@SKOne and cost 225m to make, 150m to market...375 total x 2 == 750m to break even...and no merch rights..marvel owns them. They borrowed 200m from Romneys assclowns to finance the marketing, meaning that also had to be paid back....22 JS was Sony's savior this year. Go checkout biz news, search and sort by Sony tags...almost all bad news over and over again. They even asked for bonuses to be returned in April/May...massive harddrive recalls...even some stuff about them selling Spiderman and Bond in 2013...

This is the dumbest idea I have ever heard. Sony should really just give the rights t o Marvel now.

@m0ther

Oh yeah? I'd really like to check that out if you have the link. However I'm a little puzzled on why F4 and X-Men wouldn't be able to cross over? If big of those properties are within Fox's Marvel department why wouldn't they be able to do that? Is that where these "licensing" of characters come into play? Would Marvel basically have to give Fox the "Go" for that to happen?

This makes me sad for Andrew Garfield, you can tell he's really passionate about the character. It's too bad he was stuck with shitty movies.
