The New York Times reveal that a Guardians of the Galaxy animated series is indeed coming to Disney XD next year. Rumblings of such a series began at the San Diego Comic Con back in July, but this is the first time we've had confirmation. Details are scarce as of right now, but as the channel continues to try and expand its audience - with the upcoming launch of Star Wars Rebels for example - Gary Marsh, president of Disney Channels Worldwide says, "We have more exciting collaborations in the pipeline," an indication that more Marvel shows could follow perhaps.

According to the site, the animated series will feature the same characters as the film; Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Stephen Wacker, Marvel’s vice president for current animation says that the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series will attempt to replicte the movie's offbeat humour and that it WILL pick up where the James Gunn helmed release left off and that Thanos will figure prominently in the show. It will likely be a very loose follow up to the movie then, but not one which have a significant impact on the 2017 sequel. We'll have to wait and see!

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have the first poster for the series along with a trailer.

Finally got the confirmation. I feel like we've seen that leaked concept art almost 2 years ago.

I think this 'being set in the MCU' thing is probably being a bit blown out of proportion.

I mean, wasn't there an Iron Man animated film that featured moments recreated from the first Iron Man film...don't remember that ever being considered as part of the MCU.

I imagine the Guardians sequel will not be beholden to this animated series one bit, and that it will completely do things its own way.

So, part of the mcu or...?

I will likely emulate the MCU but not be canon. Could be wrong though.

I need to accept that we'll never get an animated series as good as the Timmverse. Considering Marvel's previous attempts in animation, I'm cautious.

I hope it's better than that Avengers crap.

GOTG is golden for an animated series.

However, if they seem to just rehash designs, tone... etc from the movie. Yawn.

It looks good, but the animation of Star Lords face is rather weird.

Canon the same way Ultimate Spider-Man is. In that they reference the movies but the movies newt reference the show.

That Batman 75 animated short "Strange Days" proves we need Timm back.

Nice art animation need to spread this around to the rest of the shows . . . . and then change some of those writers on those shows as well

Well, I already hate all of Marvel's recent animation efforts, so I doubt I will enjoy this.

Is it to much to ask that they look like their comic book counterparts? Of course with Marvel everything has to be like the movies instead of the comics that are the only reason for the movies existing.

@BatzFTWfan

Batman Beyond was really great, Justice League also. Superman TAS is underrated. I guess Timm just didn't want to do the same thing his whole career.

They shouldn't take too much from the MCU movie, that could be bad

I really hope we see Yondu from his comic design and not the movie one
