“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Richard Armitage for Doctor Strange. It's not too late, Marvel. You don't even have to thank me.

Forth, and fear no darkness! Arise! Arise, Riders of Theoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day, a red day! Ere the sun rises! Ride now!… Ride now!… Ride! Ride to ruin and the world’s ending! Death! Death! DEATH! Forth, Eorlingas!

@Seejay

That scene and speech still gives me goosebumps and chills to this day.

Not only will nothing in these Hobbit movies even come close to touching scenes like that, but it's just maddening that they've been TRYING so hard to do so. These movies didn't NEED the epic scope and scale of the LotR movies.

And we haven't even seen anything yet...just wait and see how hard they try to desperately one-up themselves in Battle of the Five Armies.

That scene could quite possibly be the most beautiful, sweeping, emotional, epic and breathtaking scene in cinematic history. IMO at least. Especially at the time it was filmed we hadn't seen large scale fantasy armies, on horseback none the less, presented like that. People complain about digital effects in movies, but that right there is how it is done right.

@mdwilliamson24 It's definitely up there among the greats! It's amazing that this one scene has so much more dramatic weight, emotions, and tension (and the perfect balance of ridiculously high stakes, yet also utter hopelessness) than most MOVIES can even manage to wring together through their entire runtimes (The Hobbit movies included).

Once everyone starts yelling "DEATH!!" and then Merry and Eowyn join in, I get tears in my eyes every time. The Lord of the Rings trilogy certainly has its flaws, but one thing it consistently got right is how it somehow managed to get the audience to completely invest themselves into ALL the dramatic moments and experience it through a wide range of emotions. Just really great stuff.

I had thought about Armitage getting a major role in MCU, such as strange. Didn't even realize he was in TFA! Lol ...

wonder if anyone else would recognize him in another role though...

Great stuff guys! The part that makes me tear up every time to this day is when Theoden tells one of his horseman:
"Grimbold take your riders down the left flank after you pass the wall." Then he tells him "Forth and FEAR NO DARKNESS!" So powerful!

Star-Lord's mom was in Captain America, too. You guys must've been terribly confused by the beginning of GotG.

Cannot agree more. Among many epic moments in the Lotr, that is one of the greatest.
