BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Passes $700 Million Worldwide

Thanks to a hugely successful first week in China, James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has passed $700 million worldwide and is already closing in on this year's comic book movies featuring far more recognisable characters like Captain America and Spider-Man! Read on for details...

Guardians of the Galaxy has officially been a hit for a number of weeks (months?) now, but as expected, its Chinese opening has added even more to the movie's already impressive box office haul. With $326.7 million in North America and $387.4 million internationally, the James Gunn helmed release has a current worldwide total of $705.1 million. That puts it on track to top The Amazing Spider-Man 2's $707.9 million and it should also beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $713.9 million at this rate! It will likely just fall short of topped the $747.9 million brought in by X-Men: Days of Future Past, but Guardians of the Galaxy has by far outperformed initial expectations and it's not hard to see why Marvel gave a sequel the green light for 2017 before the first instalment even reached theaters. How many times did you guys watch the movie?

But seriously, four based on Marvel properties have passed $700 million worldwide in one year! That's amazing (and shows that CBMs aren't going anywhere anytime soon)!!

I have a good feeling that this movie will convince studios to take chances on more obscure properties!

Who wants to bet we'll see a lot of people dressing as GOTG characters on Halloween this year? I'll be among that crowd, since I'm dressing as Star-Lord lol

Stop reaching for the Guardians of the Galaxy=Suicide Squad comparisons.

Literally the ONE similarity is a that they're a team and as we know there are quite a few of those in comics.

Phase 3 is going to have at least 3 one billion dollar films with Cap 3, GOTG2, and Avengers 3 (Possibly Thor 3, although it may just make around 800 million). Marvel is unstoppable at this point.

Thanks to the BIG market in China its gonna be hard for there to be many blockbuster flops soon.

Gunn recently said in a Facebook post that, for the sequel, he doesn't just want to replicate what worked in the first film. That's a good way to go because, IMO, a lot of sequels suffer from just trying to repeat what worked in the first installment.
