THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Is 2014's Only CBM Not On The Shortlist For VFX Oscar

It may have been the worst comic book movie of 2014, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did at least make good use of special effects (mostly). However, the ten movies - which will now be cut down to five - on the shortlist for the Visual Effects category does NOT include the sequel.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a franchise killer along the same lines as Batman and Robin, something which I pointed out in my review at the time. The third instalment (previously scheduled for 2016, with a fourth set for 2018) no longer has a release date, Venom is dead, and we've heard nothing about Sinister Six for months. The movie was such a disappointment, Sony are now discussing movies for Aunt May and other characters no one cares about, so the fact that the shoddy sequel has been snubbed by the Academy probably shouldn't come as a surprise.

The VFX shortlist for the 87th Oscars has been revealed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today, and they've narrowed it down to 10 movies. It will be narrowed down to five next year after members of the Visual Effects Branch are invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films. Which of the movies below do you think is most deserving?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Godzilla
Guardians of the Galaxy
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Interstellar
Maleficent
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
Transformers: Age of Extinction
X-Men: Days of Future Past

Interstellar is most deserving. The visuals, both practical and CG, were stunning. No other film even compares imo

Interstellar better win, AMS2 was shit, just like the one before it.

Night at the Museum 3? Poorly timed and poorly churned out, doesn't deserve a spot on the list.

I'm not even a fan of the film, but damn, that one hurt.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for sure.

That list is really fricking hard to choose from, but I'd say Dawn of Apes... maybe.

The final battle looked like a cartoon half the time. Though that may have also been in part due to Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan's cartoonish, over-the-top performances.

Wait, changing my answer -- Interstellar.

As for TASM2.....well, it wasn't that bad, but I'm happy that Sony is finally throwing in the towel, or at the very least taking a second look at their strategy. Maybe Spider-Man movies will be better someday, my vote is it goes back to Marvel, but I know there are some who would say that wouldn't be so great either. Meh, at least the first two with Tobey were decent.

Interstellar or Dawn of the Planet of the Apes WILL win

For the most part the CGI in TASM2 was pretty damn good. There was one scene in particular that looked really, REALLY shitty.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes or Interstellar is gonna win it, I bet nothing on it

I don't think Josh should be permitted to post on ASM movie news if he can't handle having integrity.
