Simon Kinberg Talks X-MEN/FANTASTIC FOUR Crossover And Evolution Of 'Doctor Doom'

Fantastic Four (Fant4stic?) writer and producer Simon Kinberg talks here about the science fiction tone of the new movie, the door being wide open to a crossover with the X-Men at some point down the line, and how they're handling the origin story of Doctor Doom in the reboot...

The first trailer for Josh Trank's Fantastic Four was released earlier this week, and it's fair to say that fans were shocked by just how good the movie looks! Tonally, it's more Interstellar than Avengers, and it's that sci-fi vibe which writer Simon Kinberg is really excited for fans to see. "Part of what’s cool about the Fantastic Four comics is that there’s an emphasis on the science of science fiction," Kinberg tells EW. "And we treat what would normally be considered a superpower as a trauma. They don’t just go up a roof, jump off, and start swinging through the city. It’s the opposite. What would happen if your body transformed, and you didn’t have control over it?"

There's been a lot of talk in the past about a crossover between the X-Men franchise and this rebooted Fantastic Four movie, and while it still doesn't sound like anything definite is in the works, Kinberg is definitely open to the idea. "The reboot of FanFour really needed to work in and of itself," he explains about why they're not rushing into a team up between both teams. "We were doing something pretty radical with the tone of the movie. If we wanted to find a way to connect them to the X-Men, we could. There’s a lot of precedent from the comics."

Finally, we already know that Doctor Doom (a.k.a. Victor Domashev) will be transformed alongside the team, and it sounds as if he will definitely be a vital piece of the puzzle which sees Reed, Sue, Ben, and Johnny become the superhero team we all know from the comic books. "He has aspirations and struggles that are a little bit more classically tragic than the other characters. As much as it’s an origin story of our heroes, it also tracks how someone can become a villain." What do you guys think of these comments? Share your thoughts and theories in the usual place.

I thought it'd look like shit. The fact that everything looks generic at worst is good.

Well, I officially stopped caring about this movie again. What the hell happened? I posted all those positive comments after the trailer came out, and now I couldn't care less again. I think the same thing happened with DOFP now that I think about it. Why can't you hold my interest FOX? WHY?!

I would enjoy them to cross over at some point, but for it to work right the X-men franchise has to catch up to the fantastic 4 timeline. they wouldnt know the state of the X-men during that time period since DOFP changed the time line and they have yet to visit the changed modern times of the X-men.

Betting they couldn't crossover fantfourstic with the fox-men even if they wanted to. They'd probably need Marvel to sign off on it and you already know that's not happening.

I think some of Yall don't know what they mean by grounded... the preview showed them going to cosmic dimensions. A big giant cgi Thing, armored up/containment suit human torch, and more scifi stuff.

I think silver surfer and galactus could fit in this tone

Remember when they said Iron Man 1 would be grounded in reality

not even a glimpse of "domashev' in the trailer, and the interpretation of this character is the thing that worries me the most about this project.

Eh. Only Ben really found 'trauma' with his superpowers. The rest of the team more or less embraced theirs. The emphasis on science is nice because that's Fantastic Four's bread and butter, but this just hammers in the feeling that the FF4 would fit in perfectly with the MCU's heavily science-driven universe.
