What exactly were people expecting from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's Aquaman? There were rumblings of a surfer look at one point, while Jason Momoa also teased a slightly different appearance for the iconic member of the Justice League. We now know what he looks like thanks to director Zack Snyder, and the comic book inspirations are clear to see, despite some fans (who have clearly only seen the clean cut version in "The New 52") claiming otherwise. Read on for our look at how the movie and comic book takes on Aquaman link up as well as what inspired Snyder.

The Hair/Beard

"The New 52" Aquaman may have a clean cut look, but the character has been portrayed with a far rougher appearance over the years too, with long hair and a beard a big part of Peter David's acclaimed run in the '90s (though that version was without one of his hands). Had someone like Ryan Gosling been cast as Arthur Curry, the classic Aquaman look might have worked, but this style arguably suits Momoa perfectly. Were they right to choose this appearance though?

The Scales

Regardless of who played Aquaman, they would have probably looked more than a big daft wearing those bright orange scales! However, the tattoos and armour on Momoa's arms definitely resembles that classic appearance, and at least pay homage to what's come before. Those on his neck and stomach don't ring any bells, while the strap going across his chest could be there for him to put his trident into on his back when he's not fighting (and to keep some of that armour on). It's also clearly there to pay homage to his '90s look as you can see from the first image in this article.

The Gloves

There's not much to say about these, but the big screen gloves are obviously gone! However, the shape of his armour in that area definitely seem to pay homage to them in a very small way at least.

The Belt

Despite looking a little more worn and not quite so golden bright, the logo on Aquaman's belt looks like it's been torn straight from the pages of the comic books. There have been variations of it over the years, but this one doesn't appear to take any inpiration from one particular comic. At least it's not literally the shape of an "A" anyway. Not including it at all likely would have upset fans.

The Trunks

Well, are they trunks or trousers? We obviously can't see, but them going right down to the bottom of his legs seems likely (the black trunks over the green have thankfully been ditched). The colouring in the photo makes it hard to say for sure, but they definitely appear to be green, another thing which sticks pretty close to the comics! Now, if only we could see those boots of his...

The Trident

Aquaman's trident has been portrayed in a number of different ways over the years - it's something often left up to the artist's interpretations - but this version definitely appears to stick to the basic design seen in the comic books. It's a lot more realistic looking and intricate though, and like the rest of Aquaman's attire, looks pretty worn and beaten up. It's hard to say whether or not it's gold.
What do you think of Aquaman's big screen look for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? Does it pay homage to the comic books in a satisfying way? Let us know your thoughts in the usual place!

There's an interesting editorial to be written about exactly when it's appropriate for a comic book movie to completely disassociate an iconic character's looks from how it's portrayed in the source material.

TASM 2 found a way to pretty much rip the Spidey suit from the comics and put it in the movie. 100% faithful.

Most of the MCU movies have tweaked things here and there, updated and modernized when necessary, but clearly most of the outfits remain recognizable (other than the Twins, I suppose).

Bryan Singer's X-Men will always have a fetish for black pleather, so that's probably a lost cause.

Batfleck in BvS is practically straight from the comics, and Man of Steel gave Supes a pretty kickass suit...but muted the colors, ripped away the iconic underpants, and went to painstaking lengths to explain why he'd have a big "S" on his chest.

Now we have an Aquaman that, despite everything said here, barely resembles much from the comics. In order to make him badass, he was taken as far away from the public's perception of Aquaman as possible. Is it fair to say that they're embarrassed of the comics while others would've embraced it? No idea. I'll let someone smarter than me write something about that.

I guess what I'm asking is, where is the line where people can look at a comic book character's looks and say "Look at that. That will NEVER be able to properly adapted into a movie."

People would've said that about Vision not even a year ago, and look what we're getting in two months.

Supes' outfit in Superman Returns didn't exactly garner as much criticism as the other REAL problems in that movie.

So who's to say the orange scaled, clean-cut Aquaman couldn't have been able to exist in the DCCU? Who's to say a Supes with red underpants on the outside couldn't be adapted in Man of Steel? Why NOT have Wolverine wear the iconic yellow outfit and mask?

I'm just rambling and spit-balling at this point, but I guess it has to do with the tone of the individual movies and what they're actually going for? Because clearly you don't cast Jason Mamoa for Aquaman with the intentions of making him look like how he looks in the comics.

@TheAmbassador Haha no worries, I'm not even sure what point I was trying to get at with my own comment =P

To answer your question, like I said in my last sentence, you don't cast Jason Momoa for Aquaman and expect him to look like he does in the comics. I'm pretty sure this was what most people SHOULD'VE been expecting once Momoa was cast. Seems right in line with the whole tribal angle they've been playing up, so I don't get why people are surprised by this haha. But I mean, it's not like Momoa was the ONLY option. Theoretically they could've casted anyone in the role in order to bring it closer to the comics if they wanted to.

And that's the key, I suppose: they clearly didn't want to go in that direction. So yeah you're right, they made this creative decision for a reason and for all we know, it could be the absolute best course of action that they could've done.

Wasn't the version they went with the most hated version? This movie wasnt made for the fans just those dumb enough to buy into the modernized husk of the character like the entirety of MOS fan base on this site.

I think the tattoos are a bit much, I like the idea of them, but I think I would have done less of them so it's not his entire torso. I love the armor look though, he looks awesome!

I don't get the armor on one side only, why not just give the full on scale like armor.

My only issue with the costume is that it looks more like momoa than Aquaman. Hopefully once we get a colored image it'll be a bit better. But I don't really see the point of making everything dark muted and gritty. Maybe it'll work out for them

Looks like he wandered off the set of Gladiator.

But if it rubs your rhubarb, so be it.
