BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is Now 2014's Third Highest Grossing Release

For a time, it appeared as if James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy would be 2014's highest grossing movie in North America, but The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 knocked it from the top spot in January, and another has now beaten them both to #1. Read on for details...

When 2014 ended, Guardians of the Galaxy was the year's highest grossing movie. However, money earned this year still counts towards their overall haul, and that's why The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 became 2014's #1 movie on January 21st. It's a weird sounding system, but that's just how it works! Regardless, they've both now been overtaken by American Sniper. The Clint Eastwood helmed biopic (which actually stars the voice of Rocket Raccoon, Bradley Cooper) with an estimated $337,209,000. That's quite an achievement, but takes nothing away from Guardians of the Galaxy and just how amazing it was that the Marvel Studios movie which everyone predicted would flop ended up outgrossing characters like Captain America, Spider-Man, and the X-Men! Here's an updated list of 2014's top movies courtesy of Box Office Mojo

AlexanderLykins- seems like a reasonable prediction i doubt it will do GOTG numbers unless it is very good. i predict it will do at least as much as Thor 449 million

Still GOTG did better worldwide than movies from Captian America, Spider-man and Superman. I don't think anyone expected that.

Perhaps you might want to add "Domestic" in the title. GOTG was still third worldwide, but behind Transformers and The Hobbit.

Be aware this is domestic, not international.

@AlexanderLykins

"Marvel studios wiped the floor with Fox?"

Verily I say thee nay, Fox did well - Mutants and Apes were both good.

The fact that this is North America only also needs to be remembered because it looks likt Transformers was also used for domestic purposes yet when you look at worldwide figures Bay be and Co. were like

More impressive is American Snipers performance look at how many of those movies were visual effects spectacles as opposed to Sniper.

I imagine that even the common idiot could realize that this is North America gross; however, I've been wrong before...

Wouldn't have guessed that. Did it make any money overseas? Oddly it was the only Oscar nominee for best picture that wasn't in my top ten favorite movies of the year.

American Sniper was awful. More stupid Hollywood war propaganda.

I think if Ant-Man makes a profit it will be a success, probably do Cap 1 or Thor 1 numbers...think alot depends on how it ties in to AoU and builds some hype towards it...plus, the July release should help with kids...also feel it will need to be the strongest marketed MCU film...the Marvel name will almost guarantee success, if the movie does well with critics, will most likely do very good at the box office...I'm really looking forward to it...
