Behind The Scenes News On Marvel's SPIDER-MAN Casting Pick; Details On CIVIL WAR Role

A new report sheds some light on how Marvel went out choosing the leading actor and director of their Spider-Man reboot, and it was a very interesting - and unique - process. We also have some further details on just how much Peter Parker will factor into Captain America: Civil War...

Variety has an interesting piece up which reveals more details about how Marvel and Sony went about choosing Tom Holland to play the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man. While they initially met with unknowns between the ages of 14 - 18, the search was apparently widened to those with a proven track record when those underwhelmed, hence why Asa Butterfield was a serious contender for a while. Butterfield, Holland, Charlie Rowe and Matthew Lintz were all flown out to the set of Captain America: Civil War to test with the actors they will be working with in that movie. Don't expect him to have a major role (which is still unconfirmed by Marvel themselves) though as the site points out that, "Spider-Man is only expected to have a cameo in 'Captain America: Civil War,' so there wasn’t a rush to make a decision since the thesp would only be shooting for about a week."

Apparently, Marvel recently cut down their directors shortlist to Jon Watts, Jonathan Levine, and Ted Melfi. However, the latter two are said to have become frustrated with the process of being chosen, and decided to drop out (in fear that it may carry over to the production), helping Watts land the gig. There aren't any firm details on why Holland was cast in the role, but Marvel and Sony may have chosen someone older in the end to avoid the child labour laws that restrict the lengths of shoots. More details on the casting can be found by clicking here. What do you think?

That's interesting news on how the director got the job. With how long it took for Spider-Man to get casted, I'm not surprised it will just be a cameo.

I have faith in Holland, but I don't know jack squabble about Watts.
Hope its a little more than a cameo, Spider Man is apart of Civil War.

(in before the "TASM haters/MCU fanboys arrive)

I just wanna know if there could be at least a cameo for Season 2 of Daredevil.

Come on, just have one episode involve a Spidey/Daredevil team up with the villain being Shocker. Just have it be one episode.

@TDKReturnsBat

I don't think you know how movie studios work. Considering this is Sony, one of the biggest brand film names, just by having Spider-Man doing well doesn't mean the studio is doing well especially since they will be losing Bond.

You need more than one franchise to keep a studio alive.

I've been saying this for weeks. But there was no way they were gonna be able to fit in a major role for Spider-Man with everything else going on.

I think that he's going to have a much bigger part than expected. Hopefully we'll see him in costume soon.

For the life of me I need to know, why are you using an image from TASM2 in your article?

Are you getting soft?

My only issue with this casting is that it's Spider-Man and I didn't feel like this casting was a surprise casting.

Like Ben Affleck as Batman was a shocker and Ben wasn't rumored. Spader as Ultron's wasn't rumored. Brolin as Thanos wasn't rumored.

I was excepting something more shocking and eventful.

I know it is impossible for him to have a major role in the film but please let it be an extended cameo! Not just one "hello" and "goodbye".

At least let him be in two scenes, where he is talking to both Tony and Cap about his place in the world or something and also see him swinging around or helping in a battle.

BUT PLEASE NOT JUST A 2 MINUTE SCENE!
