Fox Confirm Plans For X-MEN TV Series...If Marvel Lets Them Make It

Talking at the Television Critics Association press tour today, Fox CEO Dana Walden has confirmed that there is indeed a small screen X-Men spinoff in the works, but it will only happen if Marvel lets them. What will they ask for in return? The Fantastic Four right might be a good bet...

You may recall that there were talks some time ago about an X-Men TV series being in development at Fox, and it sounds like it may be going ahead...if Marvel gives them the green light! While the comic publisher doesn't own the movie rights to the characters, they do obviously hold the comic book ones, and it will be up to them to decide whether or not to allow Fox to make the show. "[For] X-Men, we're in negotiations with Marvel. We're hopeful we'll be able to announce something soon. We're not closed on a deal yet but it's something we're definitely pursuing," Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden told The Hollywood Reporter earlier today.

The show is being written by Star Trek 3's Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, while Evan Katz and Manny Coto will serve as the showrunners and be credited as its creators. "The characters from the X-Men franchise are with Fox on the feature side so we won't be including Marvel characters that are at ABC with Disney," Walden confirmed when asked if this deal means we'll see the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Daredevil meet the X-Men. "This will be exclusively the franchise as it has existed at Fox." That's to be expected, but what will Marvel get out of this deal? It could be something as simple as a promise that this show won't air on the same night as one of the Marvel ones on ABC, but perhaps Marvel will ask for the chance to use certain character in the MCU like Galactus and Silver Surfer? After all, they gave Fox the chance to keep Daredevil in exchange for them!

Nice, this would be awesome

Fox can focus on the X-Men

And, Marvel could get back Fantastic Four

There is a lot riding on how well Fant4stic does at the Box Office

I hope Marvel holds out and doesn't sign off until they get the FF rights

I'd like to see an X-men tv series. I hope they focus on some of the lesser known character arcs.

I dont see a sequel to F4 happening. That means we could see Galactus & Silver Surfer in the MCU soon

@YeezusWept They better ask for at least the Galactus and Silver Surfer rights.

@0megaDaGr0dd I believe all the Netflix shows are labeled as part of the ABC TV division, but only in name; they have no input.

@Reasonnnn

I'd say they should ask for everything that isn't tied to the X-Men/mutants.

And the maybe give Fox 50% of X-Men merchandizing rights to ease the pain.

@YeezusWept That would be ideal!

MCU doesn't even really need the Fantastic Four right now, but the villains are a must have.

Keep in mind 20th Century Fox and Fox Television are separate entities. The film studio could still very much say "[frick] you" to Marvel and keep the FF rights. But an X-Men show could capture an untapped demographic that wouldn't normally go to the movies until then.

It would be a win for both Fox and MS. But both are spiteful, so...

Fox should have always been focusing on X-men anyway. Trade the FF back to Marvel. An X-men/X-Force crossover movie or an X-men/New Mutants crossover movie sound so much better than an X-men/Fantastic Four movie ever could at this point. And an X-men TV show set in the same universe as the movies would be sublime.

So Fox is at the mercy of Marvel's whim to get this show rollin'. LOL. How the table have turned huh?

Marvel should use this to get the FF rights back as part of the trade off.

Simple negotiations, Fox reverts the rights of F4 license back to Marvel, Marvel approves the Fox made X-men TV series. Let's make this happen.
