BOX OFFICE: Critically Panned FANTASTIC FOUR Opens With $2.7 Million On Thursday

It's one of the worst reviewed comic book movies of all-time, but Josh Trank's Fox's Fantastic Four reboot is still on track to take the #1 spot at the North American box office this weekend and had a surprisingly decent opening on Thursday evening. Read on for details...

Despite initial estimates which had Fantastic Four opening in the $50 million range, it now looks set to struggle at the North American box office this weekend. After all, it has an embarrassing 9% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of right now and even director Josh Trank has distanced himself from the movie. When it opened yesterday evening, the reboot took only $2.7 million, a vast contrast to the $6.4 million which Ant-Man earned last month. Despite that relatively small start, Fantastic Four is still expected to gross $40 million this weekend, meaning it should come out at #1. With a $120 million budget, Fox won't need it to make a lot to ensure a sequel, but it's hard to imagine anyone wanting one! The future of the franchise now remains clear. What do you think?

I don't know about that number one spot, word of mouth is traveling pretty fast on this dumpster fire. A damn shame, fox just pooped the bed with this one. I just wanna know, is it batman and robin bad?

Fox has been on a roll for a while now. Hopefully, this didn't completely stop this and Deadpool, Apocalypse, Gambit, Kingsman 2, Wolverine 3, etc are still good. Although, maybe this means we'll see Silver Surfer in Infinity Wars (fingers crossed)

I hope the rights revert or at the very least some sort of deal can be made. I honestly don't care if FF comes back to Marvel but I desperately want to see Marvel handle Galactus, Silver Surfer and The Skrulls.

No way this is doing $40 million. I predict $30-35, with a sharp drop of 60-70% next weekend to $11-15 million.

Best case scenario domestically, a run of $70-85 million.

Unless this film does wild numbers overseas, it's toast.

At first I was pissed about the cast and wanted the movie to fail and I know many of the members here felt the same. Then the first teaser came out and I thought I would have to eat my words, but this? I didn't expect it to be as bad as they're saying. This is embarrassingly bad. Horribly bad. I'm almost shocked lol. I thought it would be good but you can't say a movie is good and spend majority of your time defending it.

So does that mean the original was better?

Whoever thought Fox would do a good job with this movie must have been high as a kite. Revert the rights back to Marvel and see how it's done.

@KurtWagner1225 yeah, I read Donner(XMen producers one of them) actually had Tatum in mind for the role; even before Taylor Kitsch played him in Origins.

Personally, I think she had a crush on him or something.....but Rupert Wyatt's a great director, so I give the benefit of the doubt, despite my reservations...for now

I'm still sticking with my under $25 mil estimate. The way things are going, I would be surprised if it made more that $18 mil.

Though, with all the train-wreck rubberneckers and pity-sex holdouts, it might do a bit better...
