CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Star Chris Evans Isn't Concerned About Superhero Fatigue

Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg recently made some very controversial comments about superhero movies ultimately going the same way as the Western. Does Avengers: Age of Ultron star Chris Evans agree? Hit the jump to hear his insightful thoughts on the topic...

Superhero movie haters only ever seem to talk about moviegoers ultimately becoming bored with the genre, and while the next few (very busy) years promise to be a big test for these films, they're currently going from strength to strength. In the video above, Chris Evans weighs in on the subject, and it's fair to say that he sums up the whole thing pretty perfectly. So long as these movies continue to evolve and adapt to the ever changing tastes of audiences, there's really no reason why we won't be enjoying Captain America 10 over a decade from now, right? What do you guys think?

"I certainly think that given the fact that technology has finally advanced, they’re always going to be looking for other films to match their technological accomplishments. Any film that can incorporate these larger-than-life characters and fantastical locations and plots, the technology wants to prove they can do it so whether it’s superhero film or fantasy in general, that’s going to surge for a while.

In terms of superhero in general, existing properties that we know and love, it’s going to be a matter of the tone they strike. You could look at Jason Bourne as a superhero. You could take any superhero movie and if you ground it enough, if you make it real enough—that’s what I think [Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo] do really well. Certain superhero movies feel like “superhero movies.” Russo movies almost feel like human stories with a little bit of superhero sprinkled in. So you might get exhausted of the larger-than-life powers I suppose, but as long as the filmmakers keep on reinventing the flavor and the approach and the tone, audiences are going to still go."

Well if superhero movies die out he can always keep directing direct-to-rental movies.

Agreed, and also with Superhero film being apart of all action based genres, such as Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror, Thriller, etc. They can stay fresh without having to reinvent the characters.

I don't get why people are crying like there's nothing but superhero movies coming out.

We're getting SIX next year out of hundreds upon hundreds of other movies. I'm just not feeling this "fatigue" everyone is talking about, sorry.

@WakandasSoul I've been saying Spider-Man should be a Netflix series, taking it's time for a couple of seasons building itself and rebuilding audience trust and interest before launching into films for some of his bigger stories. Also, Daredevil team-up.

@MexicanSuperman I feel like "grounded" in this case is being used to describe a way to help the audience connect, make the situation feel more real and present to them (even during fantastical parts) and possibly make sure that actions feel as though they have consequences.

@TheParkRanger With DC its a fear of Batman Fatigue. And a fear of another Green Lantern/Johna Hex.

I like his answer. if they keep updating the character to whats happening in the real world, then cbm's will continue to do well. I do think they should stop rebooting characters and starting over. Peopple do get sick of seeing the same story being retold.

I don't believe Batman Fatigue is going on at DC just like I don't believe Iron Man Fatigue is going on at Marvel.

You can't have Fatigue of something unless the films with them stop being good and entertaining. It's why people believe there is Spider-Man Fatigue which there are since we've had 5 Spidey films in 13 years and we haven't had a good Spidey film in 11 years.

Glad to hear The Russo Bros are taking the same approach to CVIL WAR like they did with Winter Soldier. I love Joss because he makes The Avengers actually feel like a Comic Book brought to life, but what The Russos did with Cap 2 was something really special, they managed to find the right tone for a comic book film with a more grounded plot.

Can't wait to see what they do with Wanda and Vision.

I believe in Batman fatigue like I believe in Spider-Man fatigue. We have seen his story told many times in a few different ways, and we are about to get another one. They need to keep their origin short or in flashbacks, and dont make fools out of the audience by trying to retell the same story for half the movie.

People always wanted to see the Avengers in a feature film, we got that, same for a batman/superman movie and justice league, once we got all we wanted that's when studios will have to blow our minds to keep us excited. Marvel already did a great job with unexpected properties (GOTG) warner planned suicide squad so they are aware of that.

I like his point of view. The genre of a film doesn't mean anything. Like Interstellar which is a sci-fi movie by his aspect is more of a emotional drama by its content.
Good job Cap'!
