Marc Guggenheim Teases CONSTANTINE's "Exciting" Role In ARROW Season 4

No doubt one of the most pleasant surprises about Arrow season four was the announcement that Matt Ryan's John Constantine will be making an appearance to help bring back Sara Lance from the dead after his own NBC series was cancelled earlier this year. Fans of his show spent months campaigning for someone to #SaveConstantine, and while this isn't quite as good as him getting another chance on the small screen, it's a good start! When Superhero Hype caught up with Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim recently, he had this to say about why fans should be psyched about Constantine coming to Star City when The CW series finally returns next months.

"When you see him in the show, honestly it feels like we’re doing a Constantine/Arrow crossover, and it’s so exciting… We’re just really glad we got the chance to extend Matt Ryan’s run as Constantine by at least one more hour of television. I think you’ll see he fits very neatly into our universe. It never feels forced, it feels right. Stephen’s on screen vibe with Matt is just very natural, it’s as if these guys had been working together forever. I think people are really going to love the episode. John Badham (‘WarGames,’ ‘Saturday Night Fever’) directed it and it was just a happy circumstance, but John had also directed an episode of Constantine. It all works and it works really effortlessly. It worked effortlessly with a lot of effort I should say. I can’t wait for people to see that episode, if you thought it was a thrill just to see that one shot of Matt in the trailer wait til you see a whole episode with him."

It's going to be interesting to see if this much talked about episode leads to anything bigger for the character. While The CW giving Constantine another chance might be a bit of a stretch, the character could easily make future appearances in both Arrow and The Flash or even take on a role in DC's Legends of Tomorrow. What do you guys think? As always, let us know your thoughts below.

So is this in canon with the NBC show then?

It's not so much that he's only in one episode but it's likely that they could fit him in for these first batch of episodes. Maybe the episode is a success and the CW allows for more.

This is cool and all, but I just can't get excited about crossovers in DC's T.V. universe.......much more interested to see if Cara Delevigne's character has a possible crossover appearance with the movie Constantine or at least Justice League Dark....stuff along the lines of that.

I really hope it's a dark themes episode. Lots of bad bad shit for Constantine to vanquish!

Matt Ryan was fair as Constantine.

He honestly was just wasted on a supernaturally derivative, uninteresting, and outright boring paint-by-numbers show.

It was like they took Constantine and stuck him in "The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo". It had no edge to it. No bite. No teeth.

DC should follow Marvel's lead and put a show like Constantine on Netflix where they can actually make him as he is supposed to be, and not some G-rated goofball fighting the mediocre forces of darkness with his immortally boring and monotone cabbie sidekick and a woman who seems to have her face permanently froze in mid-smirk.

What was Zed always smiling about? She kept this look on her face like she knew something really funny but was trying to keep it a secret!

This version of Constantine was really just DC's weak version of a 'Supernatural' show. To be honest, the Keanu movie was closer in tone to the comics than this show was. I'm sure some would like it who weren't familiar with the character but having read every single comic printed I can only shake my head at the wasted potential.

Constantine is a fascinating character and deserves to be shown as he is because there is pure gold in that series that has yet to be properly translated onscreen.

Not a great way to bring him back...but not too late to get it right either.

@SpoonWielder

Yes, Wendy Mericle (one of the producers/writers on Arrow) confirmed that this retroactively makes Constantine occur in the same universe as Arrow/Flash/Legends of Tomorrow/Vixen. So yeah, the events of the NBC Constantine series occur in that universe, presumably.

@ComicsBornandBred- I was thinking the same thing. He's only in one going to be in one episode.

I just hope after this comes out CW reconsiders bringing Constantine to CW. The great thing about Constantine is it only needs to be a small season show. I personally liked how it was only thirteen episodes. Have it air during the summer when nothing else is on and they'll see a lot of viewers watching it.

@Humperdink, I know right? How did she end up getting cast as Zed? She was by far the worst part of the show and their forced interactions in every episode cheapened Constantine turning into somebody who needs a sidekick.

@Humperdink I'd like you to know that your opinion is wrong.

Seriously though, I truly love Constantine, it's one of those shows that had so much potential. Matt Ryan's portrayal is 100% why that show worked though, he pulled off crazy and funny, but could also get really emotional and tug at your heart strings. The season was building to something really cool too, with Papa Midnite and Jim Corrigan.

It just makes me so mad that Gotham get's a second season instantly and Constantine got cancelled halfway through. I know it won't happen, but I so dearly hope Arrow or Flash wraps up the Spectre subplot, or maybe they bring Constantine in for another episode to finally pay off that Dr. Fate tease.

I just hope DC can find some new home for it, even if it was just like a 10 episode thing to resolve all the major plotlines. I'm sure Amazon or Yahoo would kill to have something like Constantine for the online programming.

Hey if it worked for you, that's great!

Had I never picked up a Constantine comic (pre-New 52) I may have thought the show was pretty decent. I mean it wasn't 'horrible' but it did have a "we've been there/done that" vibe that really just played it safe rather than original.

Matt Ryan visually fit the mold for sure.
He was closer to the character than Keanu, but the Keanu movie was closer to the tone of the comics.

It's a bit of a mess in my opinion.

They can do this right, I just think they are too afraid and go with a simple and safe show that they know has worked before.

Hahaha!!! I remember that scene. If I recall correctly, it was played for laughs with Felicity throwing her tablet in a knee-jerk reaction to someone sneaking up on her and it just so happened that she got lucky.

If you ever get in a fight kids, aim for a straight shot to the Adams Apple and you pretty much win. You might actually kill the guy depending on how hard you hit, but he shouldn't have stepped up to you.

The first half of season three is pretty solid, but after his first battle with Ra's al Ghul, it kinda goes back to the quality of season one. The crossovers with the Flash are the highlights of the season.

I think Matt Ryan's doing a play on Broadway, so the one episode was all he could commit to, but the fact is that, while they could have used the character and recast, it was Matt's portrayal and the way he inhabited the role that got this episode commissioned.

With so many goddamn cross-overs I might as well just watch every episode. It's almost as if that's their plan...

They really need to do a 12-13 episode season on HULU or Netflix. It could easily be a top 3 comicbook show.
