There's no denying the fact that Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil was amazing, but why would Kevin Feige pass on the opportunity to bring the character to the big screen as part of Phase 3? Ultimately, it sounds like it boiled down to the fact that Marvel didn't feel like The Man Without Fear needed the big screen treatment, and you have to agree that their money was far better spent on thirteen episodes of TV than one big budget blockbuster! "I went into Marvel and talked to them about making it as a movie a couple of years ago, long after the Affleck movie," Drew Goddard explained in a recent interview with IGN to promote The Martian. "But what we all sort of realised is that, this movie doesn’t want to cost $200 million. The thing about Matt Murdock is, he’s not saving the world. He’s just keeping his corner clean. So it would feel wrong to have spaceships crashing in the middle of the city. But because of that, Marvel on the movie side is not in the business of making $25 million movies. They’re going big, as they should."
As for why the decision was then made for Daredevil to be moved to the small screen, he continued: "It felt that we’d have more freedom to make it on the small screen and make it more adult. Look, if we took the Netflix [show] and put it in theatres, it’s rated R. And they’re not doing R-rated movies. And we also got to really explore the character. I feel like Netflix was the best possible home for that, otherwise you’d end up with a watered down version." Goddard is spot on there, and as Daredevil has been hailed as one of Marvel's best adaptations to date, the right decision was made for this character, even if it's hard to escape the feeling that he deserves to appear on the big screen (fingers crossed for Avengers: Infinity War, eh?). What do you think?
