Zack Snyder Talks BATMAN's Suit, Casting Ben Affleck, Frank Miller's Influence, And Humor

Zack Snyder talks in detail here about creating a fabric costume for the Dark Knight in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, how much he's borrowing from The Dark Knight Returns, and whether we're actually going to see any humour in the dark and gritty movie...

Following his appearance to present the late Bill Finger with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Comic Book Resources caught up with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder to talk about bringing the Caped Crusader back to the big screen in the 2016 movie. Asked about the costume and why he's gone in a slightly different direction, the filmmaker had this to say about coming up with the look for Ben Affleck's Batman. "I had a really strong idea about what I wanted to do -- I really wanted to do sort of a fabric-based Batman; not what's become the more normal, armored Batman. That's how we evolved it." As for how he went about deciding which actor should step into that suit, Snyder added: "I definitely wanted an older Batman. I wanted a war-weary Batman. That's why, in a lot of ways, Ben was really perfect for me -- we kind of aged him a little bit. It worked really great. I'm really excited about the Batman we created."

Talk then turned to the inspiration Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns has had on Batman v Superman, with Snyder weighing in on just how much of an influence that story has had on this movie and just how much he's borrowing from the critically acclaimed graphic novel. "There are so many great artists who have drawn Batman. So many great comics that have been created -- it's countless. I was talking to Frank about it: "Dark Knight Returns" was such a big influence on me, that I wanted to to honor him through imagery in the movie. You could still make "Dark Knight Returns" into a movie, if you want. That's what I'm saying, as far as how much we used and how much we didn't use. The visual elements, there are some that I homage, but I don't think the movie [is an adaptation]." Finally, Snyder was asked if the "dark", "gritty", and "grounded" movie will have any humour in it, and his response might surprise you. "All people have to go on are the first two trailers. They're going to see more when we show more. You'll learn more."

Guys I can't get over this trailer

#StarWarsJacketSpeculation my bet is on Finn..

Anyways, back to relevance. Miller's Batman is a [frick]ing tank and I'm glad to see that influence has made its way into this film.

Concerning humor, just because it's a more serious film than other CBMs that doesn't mean there can't be humor. Humor is important, and it most definitely needs to be used in a movie like this so the audience can get a break from the bleakness; I'm confident that's what will happen and that's what a good movie should do. So many people want it one way or the other, total gloominess or constant joke after joke to the point where it's exhausting and predictable.

@amazing12

LOL! I disagree as soon as SW dies out it will be nothing but BvS! And it is funny you say all the talk you hear is Civil War, it is the exact opposite of what I hear.

Like I said before I do a lot of presentations at companies I deal with a lot of IT folk and when movies or pop culture come up....... All I hear is Batman v Superman.

As far as budget that is a rumor........... it has not been confirmed and I guarantee WB would not jump in with a movie at 410 million and than push forward with SS as well!

I guess from the one scene in the trailer they are going the Arrow route and giving this Batman a voice changer so you don't hear his real voice. Should be a interesting change from previous movies. We'll find out soon.

How could Civil War be the second most hyped film after The Force Awakens?

I mean this isn't a dick sizing DC vs Marvel contest but we've seen nothing from Civil War. No trailer, no poster, no official images. Some concept art of the character designs and teams but that's it.

Batman V Superman have had 2 epic trailers, magazine covers, posters, controversial casting (with the Batfleck), panel at SDCC.

I mean there's been no marketing for Civil War. Why on Earth would one think there's more hype for it than Batman V Superman?

Now that's not to say that hype for Civil War couldn't or wouldn't surpass BvS but at this moment, it isn't more hyped than BvS.

Either way both pale in comparison to Force Awakens.

Luckily BvS is adapted from another source. If this was really based with his own mind. We could see another Sucker Punch there.

@levitikuz

You know by now a lot of members love to make it all about Marvel. But I do agree there is no hype right now for Civil War! The only hype is among the comic book community, for instance like this site.

As are as the general public, they have no idea what Civil War is or what it is about............

Now granted there will be hype once they start promoting the movie a couple months before it premiers.

Where'd you hear that? I'd like for that to happen but I think Marvel will wait til November, they usually release the first trailer 6-months prior so I'm going just going off on my own statistic here.

@alexanderLykins

Well due to the film being wrapped up long ago, granted they did finish up on special effects a week and half ago.

But I am so glad Snyder and WB decided to take their time on this movie instead of pushing it out right away to kick off the DCEU! I have a strong feeling this movie wild have some special stuff (I have no idea what that stuff is). What I mean is why the secrecy........I mean we know nothing about this movie at all!

Is Disney doing the same marketing technique they've been doing with Star Wars, for Civil War??? Civil War has been HUSH HUSH like Star Wars. A lot of mystery and NO TRAILER. Its the most mysterious Marvel film yet in terms of what we know and what we've seen.

Yea we've seen set photos but...its like they're taking the JJ approach of hush hush marketing

@ScarletWarlock @Riiku its A RUMOR, im not gonna say its legit but a friend of mine heard on reddit that apparently, the Star Wars trailer reveal has Disney thinking about releasing Civil War trailer right after....piggyback off of Star Wars hype. Reddit post also said, that Disney may be aware that Marvel fans are anxious after seeing the SWFA trailer. I dont have a link unfortunately but @Ace101, a person on CBM, also said he heard if this.

All i have heard has been SW and BVS for the next couple months, then we have Deadpool before BVS. I have heard SW, BVS and Deadpool in terms of talks from other people specially working at a theater here in MA.

Honestly the only "dark" theme Marvel has actually done and really follow through with it is Daredevil

@ComicsBornAndBred
Obviously it could possibly be a lie, but it seems reasonable enough, Disney would, as you say, want to piggy back on the huge excitement that Star Wars is getting considering they're all under the same roof, the one thing that has me doubting(other than the fact that someone could just have made it up) is that for all the comic book trailers in the last 2 years or so, we got tipped off(by something credible like a rumor site or confirmation from studio) as to when we get a trailer, for Civil war it is hush hush. Not that we need someone to announce when a trailer will come out, it just seems that it is the case nowadays. Fingers crossed its true, though!!! Everyone pray!
