Toby Kebbell Talks FANTASTIC FOUR Failure; "The Fans Aren't Wrong"

Fantastic Four star Toby Kebbell talks here for the first time about his experience playing Doctor Doom, weighing in on the way fans reacted to the reboot and dropping some interesting remarks about the behind the scenes issues which plagued the Josh Trank helmed release...

"I was disappointed, but the fans aren't wrong. The fans want what they want to see and if they don't get satisfaction, they let you know. I appreciate that as a performer. My job is to come in and perform as best I can, and hopefully be directed in that path, and I felt like I was. I felt like the film was going to go well. It didn't turn out that the fans felt that way, so their reaction is honest, I can only appreciate honesty."

"I don't know if I learned anything from Doom apart from perhaps when I see something I don't agree with, to voice that immediately. I think it's important. As an actor, you're conscious that your career is at stake with each job, especially on these larger productions. A film like that comes out, and I'm being sent maybe four scripts in a week, and those scripts go to zero when it doesn't come out successful, so that actively affects my career. I think it's vitally important that if there's a problem on set, that it's voiced and we solve it there and I think that collaboration is very important. Not to say that didn't happen on set, but the collaboration is vital and if we don't do that, then we suffer."

During his scenes as Victor Von Doom, Tobey Kebbell was a highlight of Fantastic Four, and it was really in the second half that his Doctor Doom was transformed into a one dimensional villain. Regardless, you can tell that the British actor is being as diplomatic as possible here about his experience working on the reboot, though much of what he says in this interview is very telling. Here's hoping the talented Black Mirror alum fares better in Warcraft: The Beginning next year, eh?

I still stand by what a great cast this was.
Having watched the film, they were all cast extremely well and suited the roles.

It was a shame to see glimpses of the potential of how different and awesome the movie could have been, if they hadn't have chopped and changed parts, and removed the action pieces, and just had more time to take care of it.

But I do hope a sequel will happen and they can fine tune all of this WITH the same cast, no matter how reluctant they may be.
A sort of semi-reboot,

I really hope to see him in future products within the Comic Book Movie universe. There's about a dozen other villains I can see him playing.

There is no such thing as a highlight in Fant4stic.

I really wish I could've seen the directors cut, probably wouldn't have been breath taking but it would've just been good to see a "what if" case scenario. The question now is what on earth will Fox do with the Franchise? Use them as a way to bridge the gap between the MCU and Fox's mutant verse? Reboot? Or hand over the rights? There's a LOT that Marvel could do with the F4 but I have a strong feeling that Fox will just reboot the franchise again.

It's a shame he was wasted in the film. The film had inklings of really good ideas but never fleshed them out enough to get people to care about it. Even if Marvel get the rights back I don't think the F4 will ever make a solo film, theyll be resorted to what the Hulk has become, popping up in othe people's movies and coming in during Avengers movies.

@DallasAvenger

I gotta disagree, I favored how they handled the horror elements of them exposing their powers in the lab for the first time. It was pretty unique.

@JamesMann

I think Fiege said an extremely while back that he had no interest/plans of using the F4 (at that time) in sure his mind had changed just in case something were to happen. But yeah, as I recall Marvel only wanted their cosmic related characters and I can see why with Infinity Wars on the brink of arriving soon. Something will most likely need to be arranged by late 2017 though.

I really want to see a director's cut of this film. I get the feeling it wasn't terrible, just too adult for Fox's tastes.

He is a great actor. I'm sure he will do a great job in Warcraft.

I always feel bad for actors like that. The writers and directors are to blame, not the guys hired to act it out. Same reason why I don't get why everyone shits on Affleck for Daredevil. He was just a kid hired to act out a character. Blame the shitty writing and poor direction

This was Fantastic....... a FANTASTIC FLOP!

Hopefully Fox go ahead with the sequel though & we get Financial Failure 2. 😂

I like Toby so I don't put him at fault, he did what the job told him to do.
But as far as Fox doing another FF movie in the next 10 years... Give up FOX, not only a very amount of the fans don't want another movie, but even the rest of the world don't wanna see another FF film.

What kind of failed abortion thinks this was better than Utron? It's not even as good as The Room or Killer Tomatoes.

Goddamit man I almost had!

@TheParkRanger "Still better than that shit-stain of a film AOU."

Is a troll successfull when your only reaction is uncontrollable laughter? Hmm

Im all for opinions here but the unjustified hate on some projects drove me away from this site for a while. AOU is a good/great film. It balanced various tones and plotlines evenly and with style. People have to stop saying movies are bad because its not what they want. Fant4stic is not a good movie but theres a difference between that and say First Class that is a decent movie that didnt have what i wanted in it.

The only benefit of this abortion is Deadpool 2 being fast tracked & taking what would have been FF2's release date. 👍

I don't see any FOX shareholders be happy or even agree on making another FF film.
That last movie really hurt FOX this quarter and the other 2 FF films didn't exactly do well either

Fox would have to be insane to attempt a sequel.

If I was an executive as Fox, I'd try to sell the IP back to Marvel for the highest price. Otherwise, it will go back for free in 7 years, or result in another garbage movie that hemorrhages money.

It's a big IP, but it's poison right now. At least Marvel can use the ancillary characters/villains.
