SUICIDE SQUAD: Charles Roven Reveals Surprising Details About 'The Joker'; Confirms PG-13

We've been hearing a lot about Jared Leto's decision to go method for The Joker in Suicide Squad, but in a recent interview with Collider, producer Charles Roven talked more about how the Oscar winner (Dallas Buyers Club) behaved on set in order to become The Clown Prince of Crime. "Look, you know, it was different, it was fun," he acknowledges. "The group first wasn’t sure because the AD’s had to call him ‘Mr. J’ to get him to come to the set [laughs]. And he did in many ways isolate himself from the rest of the group, but that’s really what his character was, the purpose of his character in many ways, other than when he was with Harley or trying to get Harley. It was very entertaining, it was fuel for a lot of good sport and a lot of laughs, and his isolation bonded the squad, and we wanted the squad bonded." The special features for this movie should be very interesting indeed, and it sounds like a fascinating way to have approached the character.

As for the movie's rating, you can forget it following Deadpool by taking aim at an R. Despite the impression given off by pretty much everything we've seen from Suicide Squad, it's going to a PG-13 in order to crack into that all important summer blockbuster audience for box office success. "The intention of the film is definitely to be PG-13… We really want to make these films tonally consistent so that, as I said because this is a shared universe, at least our current thinking—and again, we’re not dealing in absolutes because while this is business it’s also a creative endeavor, so you want to leave yourself open to changing your mind, doing something different, being inspired, that’s the whole process of filmmaking is you have to allow for inspiration as well as having a road map for what you’re gonna do. So our plan right now is to make all these films PG-13. In some cases, you know, right there on the edge of PG-13, but still PG-13." Despite what some fanboys might've wanted, the movie was never going to be a hard "R". If you want an R-rated comic book movie, then the budget will be significantly less - like Deadpool.

Besides, the DCEU is only just now starting out, which means they want it to be accessible to the widest possible audience. No way WB/DC would be dumb enough to forfeit half their profit just so fanboys could get a little more gore and language.

I'm sure it'll still push the envelope and work that PG-13 rating.

The Dark Knight was incredibly mature and still kept the PG-13 rating. I think it can be done, and done correctly with this.

Nah, it was Pg-13 too. Seemed like it could've been R though.

I was hoping for NC-17 with plenty of full frontal of Killer Croc.

All this is fine (even if the method stuff is a bit pretentious), but I really don't like hearing stuff like: "I that's the plan for now, because, you know, it's a business or whatever". This is the kind of pussyfooting and lack of vision that has ruined Fox's franchises. And it reinforces my concerns that this production was making short sighted decisions instead of building a universe that people are going to want to continue to see more of 10 years from now.

It just smacks of lack of conviction. Early on, I can understand that. Marvel essentially ditched the Incredible Hulk and everything in it once it became clear that the formula was wrong. They retooled and we got a great Hulk. Hopefully WBDC will understand how to fix what doesn't work in their movies (because some stuff will not work) without scrapping the whole idea.

Or you know what? Maybe not. Maybe DC is better off doing isolated films without continuity. Just Elseworlds kind of stories. Maybe that's a better model for them.

I think we should all think about how many wonders DC has done with darker characters even in their Animated movies. If they can push the limits there I think they could do it even better on the big screen.

It's funny because in the comics, most arkham inmates or villains tell each other joker stories when they want to scare each other. I think they can do the same here if they don't want to show the graphic details and more.

@TheRationalNerd

I've warmed up to them, haha

I incorporated Iceman, Richard Kuklinski and others into the mix, and I like it better know. I was always for Leto, but the look definitely didn't sit well with me at first. Kuklinski had a tattoo of the grim reaper on his hand, to warn people of what they were getting into, and it makes a lot of sense when compared to this, Joker

If you saw The Joker from the comics, especially recent years walking on the street, or in a bar and were stupid enough to mess with him, you would probably have the worst day of your life and the Joker would enjoy every second of it, ha

Also, Joker has always been known for shock value

Ultimately though, the trailer is what sold me, and the "I started a joke" theme was brilliant

Can't wait

@Spock0Clock

I actually did a survey not too long ago on my instagram asking folks which Hulk was their favorite and I kid you not that a mass majority took more interest in Norton's Hulk from the 2008 movie than the Avengers version. They reached their peak with Hulk there. He even had more dialogue in that one film than all of the Avengers movies together.

That's not fair. Croc looks like definitely a high-end TV series. I'm afraid you're right about Will Smith, though.

I'm aware that TIH has its defenders, but I'm not sure that survey is methodologically sound. :)

And obviously Marvel hasn't completely disowned it (William Hurt's Thunderbolt Ross coming back is evidence of that), but it's something that Marvel feels was something of a misstep.

@DanteSparda I wouldn't form an opinion about the entire budget based on a few character posters. I wouldn't even use the teaser as an example, because we've seen less that 5% of the entire movie.

But there's no reason for WB/DC to skimp on the budget for Suicide Squad - otherwise they would've made it rated R right from the get-go.

"PG-13?? Seriously? Well, that's a huge let down for me, I mean I'm pretty sure they can make a great PG-13 Suicide Squad movie but it could have always been better rated R".

lol, I would ask "are you serious"? but you are though, smh.

Like @GodzillaKart said, a home release, YEA I can see having 2 versions out then.

@Nomis Correct. There have been some movies that came out in the 70's/early 80's that should've been Rated R but got PG ratings(ex. A Soldier's Story & Prophecy: Monster Movie)

Shit.

Y'know, for a second there I was more excited about this than I was BvS. Now, not so much.
I thought this was a sure-fire R? Low-budget, vilains, David Ayer... Seriously PG-13? Come on!

And the whole universe now is PG-13?!
WTF?!?!

This isn't Disney, people.

What about the more Vertigo-flavoured movies, like Dark Universe or Sandman?

Way to shit on the future.

Fvck.
