BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Nears $800 Million Worldwide

With it being Christmas Day tomorrow, chances are that we may not get any solid updates on Star Wars: The Force Awakens until the weekend, but with tickets still selling out fast, it's quickly become apparent that this movie is something special indeed. Hit the jump for details...

We told you earlier about Star Wars: The Force Awakens taking aim at $500 million in North America this weekend, but the latest international numbers have confirmed that the movie is set to sail past the $1 billion mark worldwide at roughly the same time. As of right now, the J.J. Abrams helmed movie has a global cume of $765.9 million, and despite competition from the likes of Daddy's Home and The Hateful Eight, it's expected to do very well tomorrow and the days that follow. The speed in which the movie is breaking these records (and the fact that business isn't showing any significant signs of slowing down) lends some weight to reports that Star Wars: The Force Awakens could end up beating Avatar's record $2.7 billion haul, but seeing as it looks set to make $1 billion in the space of a little over a week, it should end up becoming only the third movie in history to hit $2 billion. Will you be spending you Christmas Day in a Galaxy Far, Far Away?

Just looking at pre-sales for AVX and IMAX theaters where I live and every showing from 1:45 till the last showing is at a minimum 80% sold out. That's 17 showings on X Mas day that are almost completely sold out. On X-mas day!

I will be going for my second go round and I have 2 litlle cousins (aged 9&10) coming to town in a 1 1/2 weeks that I promised to take. Almost a billion dollars in a week and it hasn't opened in China yet! And yet there are buffoons on this site and others that contend that this movie is terrible and derivative, at least I think those are the terms that the hipster d-bag are throwing around like they are something other than fat neckband punks pretending to be movie critics.

Was an amazing movie though. So many moments that made me smile and feel the magic of the originals.

Isn't Obi Wan's Lightsaber still missing in action after Vader killed em? How come no one is looking for that thing?

What? Almost a billion so quick. That's amazing. I loved this movie even with the few things that I had complaints about. I think it deserves the title from avatar. It's not like the greatest movie in the world has to be the number one seller at the box office. Otherwise none of the top five movies with the highest gross would be there. SW is a spectacle. Something bigger then a lot of things in pop culture. These numbers just show you that when people go the theatre they want to be mesmerized and experience a once in a life time event. Congrats to SW for it has be come that event

2nd showing earlier tonight, and it was just as packed as any opening night flick, and it's still getting a lot of showings.

Well I hope it beats Avatar.......but I feel as though this movie may lose major steam mid Jan.

Hopefully, I'll be alive to witness another movie breaking this movie's records and it will be another Disney movie, that I'm sure of.

This is the first movie since the first Jurassic Park movie where I felt like I was watching a special event rather than just a blockbuster movie. I mean, I know it's Star Wars but I never really got that feeling with the prequels. This movie just has that special feel about it.

@Pointman Thats what I was thinking. Whats interesting is that if I recall correct, Anakin/Luke's Lightsaber was based on Obi Wan's design. Initially when Force Awakens trailer came out I wondered if it wasn't Luke's that they found but instead Obi Wan's. Vader had to have possession of it. He would not have just left it there. I know in the movie and related material they refer to it as Luke's saber but if the theory of Rey is Kenobi maybe it's really Obi Wan's saber.

@Scorpo I gotta think Vader would have grabbed that thing. He goes right up to Obi Wan's cloak. No way he just leaves it but who knows maybe it did blow up with the Death Star.

The Force Awakens = disappointing/ A New Hope Rip-Off/ Overhyped by critics

Not a great movie.

@GhostofFortune overhyped or you just don't like it so everyone else is wrong?
continuezero
continuezero - 12/25/2015, 4:16 PM
@pointman Ah ok, likely the one Luke still holds. Would Anakin have not based it on Obi Wan's initial design? I guess he could have crafted his own. I just read that padawan's often base their designs on their masters.
