Tilda Swinton Reveals The Gender Of 'The Ancient One' In DOCTOR STRANGE

In case it wasn't obvious, Doctor Strange is going to be a very unique CBM, and the fact that Tilda Swinton is playing The Ancient One is proof of that. Now, both the actress and Kevin Feige have addressed her portrayal, and it's even crazier and brilliant that you thought...

In the comic books, The Ancient One is portrated as being an elderly Asian man, so what's up with casting the amazingly talented Tilda Swinton to play the character in Doctor Strange? Well, like The Mandarin before her, it seems as if Marvel wanted to move away from portraying the Sorcerer Supreme's mentor in such a stereotypical fashion. "We are always looking for ways to change," explains Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. "I think if you look at some of the early incarnations of the Ancient One in the comics, they are what we would consider today to be quite, sort of, stereotypical. They don’t hold up to what would work today. Also, within the storyline of the comics, and our movie, ‘the Ancient One’ is a title that many people have had. We hit very early on on, What if the Ancient One was a woman? What if the title had been passed and the current Ancient One is a woman? Oh, that’s an interesting idea. [Clicks fingers.] Tilda Swinton! Whoah!"

"And it just hit."

However, while that appears to clear things up, it still doesn't sound as if Swinton will necessarily be playing the character as a woman. "Look, she’s a chameleon in everything she does," Feige continued when asked about the Snowpiercer star. "She has this amazing [ability to] harness of this androgynous sense. So, we use the term ‘her’ and ‘she’ in the film but, other than that, it’s very androgynous. Because it doesn’t matter." So, she will be a she, but Doctor Strange is definitely approaching The Ancient One in a very unique way. In fact, when Swinton herself was asked about whether her character is male or female, she teased: "I wouldn’t know how to answer that one. I think it’s all in the eye of the beholder..." What do you guys think of these details?

Yeah, divine beings don't need a gender, androgynous ancient one makes sense.

I love her as the angel in Constantine

With everything we've heard and seen from this movie through concept art and such with the weird worlds they will be showing and how this movie will be like an acid trip....the most confusing and weird part about this movie to you guys is that a mantle that has been held by many people is going to a woman??

Really?

talk about, being daring, edgy and epic. Changing a traditional male role for a female.
Call me when they switch out Elsa from frozen with a man.

I think they could make the original Ancient One work if they did it, as Nomis said, "with dignity and respect". It could work, and I don't think you'd see many people shouting, "RACIST!" or anything. Still, some things need a mixup. If not for avoiding racial stereotypes, then at least for the sake of making the movie seem a bit fresher and newer by avoiding cliches.

Would've liked to see the Ancient One be from Tibet, but also would've liked them to look a little more Asian or Indian... But really doesn't bother me that its a chick. She's a good actor/actress, she was good as Gabriel in Constantine.

I don't mind at all. Swinton's got a "mysterious" vibe around her that is perfect for a role like the Ancient One.

The idea of the title of Ancient One being passed down to different people seems to fly right in the face of the "ancient-ness" of the role, does it not?

"How long have you been the Ancient One?"

"A few weeks. The Ancient One before me held the role for only 6 years, but the one before that was, um, like, 200 years or something."

"So, you're not really ancient at all, are you?"

"Uh, no. No, I'm not."

"I'm calling you Bob."
