Samuel L. Jackson Had One Major Issue With STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Samuel L. Jackson has weighed in on J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it sounds like there was at least one thing he didn't like...this could be controversial! Meanwhile, the actor also weighs in on the bizarre circumstances which led to him being cast as Mace Windu.

Sorry Sam, but I don't think you're in any position to judge who needs training with a lightsaber! That aside, and his passion for the franchise is clear to see in the second interview. The Hateful Eight star clearly felt very lucky to be part of Star Wars when he played Mace Windu in the divisive prequels, something which was probably evident from the fact that he kept his lightsaber and had it engraved with the words, "Bad Motherf***er"! Do you agree with his assessment of the lightsaber battles in Star Wars: The Force Awakens? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts below.

Starring original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker, and franchise newcomers, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o and Max von Sydow, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now in theatres. How many times have you seen it?

I thought the lightsaber fight in FoA was great, as it actually looked like they were trying to kill each other without it looking overly choreographed. Which is what the prequels suffered from as they were too concerned about twirling about then going for a killing stroke.

Cant' disagree, but Sam has to remember that a partially trained Jedi turned Knight of Ren (Ben Solo) was fighting a rookie Storm Trooper and a latent Force-Sensitive. It's not like they SHOULD have been twirling around and doing triple flips and succession parries or anything.

He is wrong. The Lightsaber battles were purposely toned down and made to look a bit more realistic to avoid the OTT, over-choreographed dancing from the prequels.

@omegaDaGrOod he did not defeat a sith lord sidious toyed with him to turn anakin. He had just laid waste to all the other jedi masters without breaking a sweat. He knew anakin was on the way so he spared him until he accomplished his goal. They dispatched of his ass easily.

His character went toe to toe with Darth Sidious. He can talk. And he is not wrong, the sword fighting in TFA wasn't the most gracious. I think that was the point though, Abrams wanted it to be more raw and brutal. And that's understandable for Rey and Finn who (presumably for Rey) never wielded a lightsaber before. Kylo Ren should have had more technique though. But I heard the sabers they used on set were pretty heavy. More so than the plastic props they used in the prequels.

It takes a special kind of director to make SLJ boring on screen. George Lucas is that director.

Makes sense to me that Jedi trained from early childhood to fight with lightsabers are better than people fighting through mostly pure instinct and the force.

Finn obviously had melee training as a Stormtrooper (like his friend with the riot gear) and together with sheer balls he was able to go a few rounds with Kylo before being soundly beaten. Rey on the other hand, WAS trained I think. It's my guess she was part of Luke's academy as a child but doesn't remember for some reason. In her flashback we see her as a child wearing something similar to padowan gear.

I know everyone is high off of Star Wars right now, but aside from the movie just being good, the lightsaber fights were not part of the down sides. And if you think they were then you don't understand what the light saber battles are supposed to be about. I'm not a Star Wars fan. I can appreciate the originals for what they are - a fun time. The prequels sucked - not a fun time. The lightsaber battles in the prequels are part of the problem.

That's just one theory of course. If she wasn't trained it was a bit strange that she was so proficient with a lightsaber so quickly, but it's a small gripe at the end of the day.

They set up several times during the course of the movie how powerful the bowcaster is and then Kylo Ren is nailed with it and bleeding all over the place and people still ask why he seemed more powerful at the beginning of the movie then he did during the final fight.

@RorMachine

Good theory.

My first reaction to the flashback was that Luke didn't want to drag his daughter into the Jedi Hunt so he left her on Jakku. I'm assuming that's why he gives that expression at end like "What the hell did you get yourself into?" lol.

I don't know if Sammy knows the prequels weren't liked that much by original fans.

Yeah, as I've gotten more distance from the hype, I'm coming to realize that this is genuinely an awful movie.

It's well made, it's kinetic, it's exciting for 2 hours if you switch your brain off. But as a Star Wars movie, as something to continue the story or the franchise, it treats the whole thing with utter, throwaway contempt. It's basically a polished turd with some PC sugarcoating.

Even the prequels are starting to look better in comparison with this. Yeah, they suck too in many ways, but if you think about some of the major reasons why they sucked, some of those same reasons apply to this (e.g. chains of improbable coincidences, re-using story elements, crappy bits of dialogue, even crappy bits of CGI ffs). And if you look at it in the bigger picture, while you can say Lucas failed, at least he [frick]ing tried to expand our sense of the Star Wars universe and show something vast and epic.

It's a seriously awful movie and I think people are going to realize it more and more - especially when it comes out on other media and people start to see it in the context of the sequence from I-VII.

It is clearly established early in the film that Rey can fight. It's clearly established in the film that Kylo was emotionally unstable AND had been shot by Chewie. Additionally, he offered to train Rey, which indicates to me that during their final fight, he WASN'T trying to kill her. People keep overlooking all of this for some reason.

The prequel duels were too choreographed. It didn't even look like people were trying to hit each other. The battles in TFA were meant to look like people actually fighting.

The only issue I had with any of the lightsaber battles in TFA was the last one because Daisy Ridley was noticeably much slower than Adam Driver with her blade. However, I believe that this was an editing problem.

Stupid ass script. A Master Jedi like him should never kill in cold blood like that.

Incredible how it looks like Lucas himself doesn't understand SW.

The lightsaber duels were ok, the weak point for me was the "bigger and badder death star", c'mon... what a joke. Please, be a little more creative in the next flicks. I liked TFA a lot, but JJ played very safely... i wish he had been bolder, but the film is correct.

Sooo, Rey's too good with a lightsaber yet the lightsaber battle wasn't good enough.

So much cognitive dissonance on here, I don't get it...

I liked the battles in this film. They were more brutal and raw. However the ones in the PT were easily better. One of the highlight of those films. I can understand why Abrams did what he did, but lets hope with Episode 8 when they're all trained and toughened that we see the spectacle and lethal grace that lightsaber battles should be.
