LEGION Won't Be Set In The X-MEN Universe; Surprising New Plot Details Revealed

More story details have been revealed about Legion, and it turns out that it won't be set in the same world as the X-Men movies and will instead utilise new characters! Meanwhile, we now also know when the series will air on FX, and it's sooner than you're probably expecting...

FX President John Landgraf confirmed at the Television Critics Association press tour today that Legion will likely premiere on the network by the end of 2016, but also revealed that there are no plans for the series to tie into the X-Men Universe. In fact, it's set in an entirely different world! "It's not in the continuity of those films in the sense the current X-Men films take place in a universe in which everybody on planet Earth is aware of the existence of mutants," he said. "The series Legion takes place in a parallel universe, if you will, in which the US government is in the early days of being aware that something called mutants exist but the public is not. I wouldn't foresee characters moving back and forth because they really are parallel universes." That's a shame, but Fargo's Noah Hawley is such a genius that Legion being incredible is near enough a guarantee.

Adding that the show will take place in the past, Landgraf said that the show will run for ten episodes and indicated that we won't see characters from the movies factoring into it in any way. "It’s still in process but I think at the moment they’re all new characters... But I’m not 100% sure thatll be the case by the time it airs." As for how it's developing, he said: "We're quite well along. We've had a writing staff working. We've seen not only the pilot but several episodes and we're well in process of casting. I would anticipate that Legion would go on the air some time in 2016, this year. We don't tend to order series straight out the gate because I still really believe in the pilot process. We really think of it as a series. We're already in active prep. We're building sets, and our writers room has already been assembled. ... The vast majority of things that we pilot do go forward to series. I'm pretty optimistic about Legion. The scripts are extraordinary."

So pretty much like the CWverse, a parallel universe where the big guns never existed or will never show up.

What are the odds that Legion isn't even Xavier's son?

That's not what I wanted to hear. I wish this would've been attached to the big X-Men universe. That would make my interest a lot higher. The possibility of cameos would be great too.

I've heard nothing but great things about FX's Fargo so I'm sure this will be great too.

@Darth258:

You mean, like the MCU, where the "big guns" never show up on TV as well?

That's actually better. Don't make it a cameo fest or anything stupid like that.

I was mesmerized by Fargo. Plowed through both seasons in 2 days. It was cool how they subtly tied those seasons into the Fargo film.

Definitely trust this Noah Hawley guy to deliver some kind of mind bending surrealistic thriller.

I'm much more comfortable with an universe that share just events and feels linked without using major characters than two separate and totally unrelated universes where surprisingly one doesn't (read: can't) use some characther, or when some other character shows up in one universe it gets suddently and conveniently killed off/erased from the other. (See Deadshot)

So hold up, if this is set in a parallel universe then does this mean that it can eventually pave the way for a different take on the X-Men characters and etc? The X-Men universe is known for time travel and alternate universes but in some ways they could actually allow this show to be the beginning of it's own universe featuring different takes on X-Men related characters that we're all fond of. It's just a bummer because they actually could've tied it into the film universe. But, I guess we'll see how this moves along.

This could be amazing, but could easily be a clusterfvck. Legion is such a bizarre and complex character. Plus, they could cross over to any other TV series or movie anyway if they want. Doesn't Legion have dozens of omega-level mutant personalities inside him? I'm certain one of them could warp reality or time or dimensions to jump to another continuity if the studios wanted it to happen for a bit. Damn. We're getting a Legion TV series. I remember when I was excited to watch M.A.N.T.I.S. when I was younger. What a great time to love comic book media!

And don't get me wrong, i like the DC shows too. It just irks me when the make "separate universes" that can't have their own version of the prime universe's character because reasons.

What's the point selling as X-men tv show if there won't be any cameo, any conectivity, any nothing ! WTF just say it's a Sci-fi Tv show and you won't even have to deal with Marvel ! It's 100% dumb !!!

Like [frick] man, I mean like damn didn't Kinberg just say that they were all producing some of these shows and etc? Does this also imply that HELLFIRE is set in the same universe as the films? Or the same universe as Legion?

Darth258
Darth258 - 1/16/2016, 12:31 PM

That's what i hope. A parallel version of some of the X-Men would be fun to watch.

TheFox
TheFox - 1/16/2016, 12:33 PM
What?

... What?

Good God, what is even the POINT of doing a Legion series if it's not spun off from the X-Men movies? Fox owns the rights to all of the characters, and they've already established a world that audiences are familiar with and interested in... but no, by all means, let's throw all of that out the window and rewrite the "mutant" story from scratch, so they can... what? Crank out another "conspiracy all around us" narrative, like Men in Black?

This just killed a LOT of interest I had in this show. But you never know... maybe they have something special up their sleeves. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Seems to me like they want to use known Marvel characters, but are still negotiating with Disney.
Maybe Disney having the FF film rights is still on the table.

Otherwise, it sounds like we're gonna get another one of these:

@TheRationalNerd like i said in other thread bro, seems like FOX dont have a plan for the long run like Marvel and DC. For me its a major bummer since the X-men are my favorite Marvel characters, Gambit above them all.

SAMURAI36 - 1/16/2016, 12:38 PM
@ Darth258:

Sorry none of that makes any sense. At the end of the day, you've gotten sucked in by the marketing machine, that gives you the impression of interconnectedness, but no real substance of it.

At the end of the day, all of these franchises are pretty much doing the same thing. Some are just doing it better than others, but the connection aspect does not add to the quality of each individual product, although it can take away from it.

AlaRebeIde - 1/16/2016, 12:40 PM

@DrDoom that's another reason to introduce this shows in the same Universe, it can't get any worse.
Kyos
Kyos - 1/16/2016, 12:44 PM
Well, I didn't really expect this to be connected to the movies. That would require quite a bit of, you know, planning. I'd be content if I got the feeling they had a plan how to establish an actual continuity just within their movie universe.

dcmarvelimage - 1/16/2016, 12:47 PM
[frick]ing Good now the show can do whatever the [frick] they want it won't be like Shield where they only have access to a small percent of their properties.
Darth258
Darth258 - 1/16/2016, 12:48 PM
Probably i should've focused more on "never existed and never will" rather than "never show up", because my issue is, like TheRationalNerd said, about parallel universes and parallel version of those characters.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 1/16/2016, 12:49 PM
I KNEEEEEW IT WOULDN'T BE SET IN THE FILM UNIVERSE. Idk why people thought it would be
Darth258
Darth258 - 1/16/2016, 12:56 PM
@SAMURAI36

I wasn't speaking of quality. Just that i don't see why an allegedly "separate" universe can't have its own version of a character that exist in another.

Also with Arrow and Flash is understandable, but with this one and the X-Men universe, and taking out the X-Men from the equation will feel like another Heroes (or Mutant-X.. oh god..)
GhostDog
GhostDog - 1/16/2016, 12:59 PM
The X films Universe timeline is SO [frick]ED UP, it'd be tough to connect the tv side to the films in a cohesive and effective manner. Let's be real, it's tough to connect universes; I think we take for granted how Marvel does it very well; not perfect, but they do a damn good job.

I enjoy the films, but the continuity is a cluster [frick]
Darth258
Darth258 - 1/16/2016, 1:04 PM
They could set it in the first trilogy continuity so when it gets cancelled they can blame time travel.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 1/16/2016, 1:04 PM
Wait so, no Xavier-Legion relationship???? That is one of the BEST things about the Legion character. That dynamic is sooooooooooo intriguing because Xavier is a DEAD BEAT DAD.
