Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace was released in 1999 to a mixed reaction from critics and an overwhelmingly negative backlash from disappointed fans. Regardless, The Hollywood Reporter reveal that George Lucas and 20th Century Fox's decision to rerelease the film in 3D has resulted in it becoming only the 11th film ever to earn over $1 billion globally. Since being released a few weeks back, The Phantom Menace has earned $73.4 million, taking its total to $1,009.4 billion. The kicker? It's now only $1.5 million away from beating 2008's The Dark Knight and becoming the 10th most successful movie of all time.

Not surprising, there are lots of kids that would have gone to see it, and lots of deluded Wars fans that couldn't stay away:)

As much as a hate SW:TPM, I despise tdk more. At least TPM is known and accepted as sh!t; tdk still fools people into thinking it's great. And SW fanboys are nowhere near as annoying as nolan-worshippers.

GO TPM!!!

@relentless1 As much as I agree (and as a massive Star Wars fan), you can't say it's time has passed. It's been over 10 years and The Phantom Menace has still grossed that much. It may be a bad movie but fair doos to it.

I wonder how much of a cut the stars of these movies get for a re-release! I guarantee that 90% of the people that come on this site and bitch about the prequels were first in line at midnight showings for this garbage! This site is full of hypocrites! As was already said...It doesn't deserve it! Well...neither does TDK, but I digress.
