John Slattery Hasn't Been Approached For IRON MAN 3; Would Like To Star In THE AVENGERS 2

Were you hoping for more flashbacks to Tony Stark's past? Well, if they are going to be in the third installment of the hit Marvel Studios franchise, they seemingly won't involve John Slattery as Howard Stark. Hit the jump for more.

Considering the fact that Tony Stark's father is dead, it seems unlikely that too many fans were expecting to see him return in Iron Man 3 after appearing in a recorded message in Iron Man 2 (played by The Adjustment Bureau's John Slattery) and as an even younger man during the WWII set Captain America: The First Avenger (this time brought to life by British actor Dominic Cooper). However, in a recent interview with GQ Magazine, the Mad Men star was quizzed about whether or not Marvel have approached him for Iron Man 3 and had this to say.

No, they haven't. I was kind of hoping for that in the beginning, but the character in Captain America was 20 years earlier than the part I played, which was already 30 years earlier than the time of the film, so the short answer is no! Would I like to do Avengers 2? Yeah!

Both Slattery and Cooper delivered memorable performances as Howard Stark and while it's possible that both could return in flashbacks, this seemingly confirms that it won't happen for the time being. However, as the character played such a large role in the creation of S.H.I.E.L.D., who knows when or where either actor may appear in future. Would you like to see more of Howard Stark? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

Theres no reason why they cant use both actors. Itd be a great way of expanding the Marvel Universe through time. Dominic Cooperin WW2 in regards to early S.H.I.E.L.D. And John Slattery in regards to Stark Tech

ckal That's a tough one, Cooper was the young playboy trying to get the girls, but Slattery was the older, more sophisticated business man. I like Slattery more, but Marvel did do something cool. They evolved his character, I mean he is a inmature, "World on my fingertips" guy, then Cap, "dies" and he moves on with the company and makes better weapons to defeat the Nazi's, hence Nick Fury in Iron Man 2 saying, "He helped give us the atomic bomb." Either Way, MAY 4TH!

Howard Stark's story feels done. He found the cube, Cap isn't going back in time so that one is closed. Tony got closure finding out his Dad actually cared about him and found the way to upgrade his suit to not die. What is left for Howard Stark? Maybe someone with more comic knowledge of the character can tell me because right now, Howard Stark just feels finished.

Even the tech used for the carrier was revealed in Captain America so we know of that technology he helped them with. He just feels like a finished part of the story.

Now rather you prefer Dominic Copper or John Slattery is up to you. If they do a Nick Fury movie it could take place in the 70's and they could use John Slattery as Howard Stark. I saw somewhere in an interview the actor that played Dum Dum Dugan said that he would like to do a movie like that. So you would have Nick Fury, Howard Stark, and Dugan! It would also be a cool way to introduce the beginning and early days of SHIELD. Maybe even a young agent Colson! Ha!

should stick with cooper for continuity sake. it's only a matter of time before they have to recast black widow and hawkeye.(or kill them off) let's at least try to keep the supporting characters around..

It would be cool to do a movie with just Black Widow and Hawkeye! To really get into their back story. Next from Marvel I hope we get a Dr. Strange movie. I know they've been talking about it, but I want to hear some casting news. Maybe we'll get some really good easter eggs in the avengers as to what's next for the MCU.

I would like for him to be revealed in like SHIELD test footage or something, for the cosmic cube, or other things that SHIELD delt with and that they brief the Avengers on in the sequel or even IM3. Remember he was a founding member of SHIELD so odds are he was active in whateve they were doing before he died

@Ha1frican That sounds like a good idea. Even small stuff like you said him being in the background of SHIELD test footage. If it was only for a few seconds it would still help the MCU.

my life would be complete if they did a cold war Era Origin of Shield movie. team could be "Fake" Cap, Young Nick Fury, and Howard Stark supplying tech, against Winter Soldier and Black Widow, and Anton Vanko, and Black Widow defects at the end... maybe?
