SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH Getting A Superhero Style Reboot From Sony Pictures

Remember Sabrina The Teenage Witch? After two animated series in 1969 and 1971, as well as a live action sitcom which ran for seven years starring Melissa Joan Hart, Sony are rebooting the franchise as a superhero movie!

Deadline reveals that Sony Pictures are bringing Sabrina The Teenage Witch to the big screen. The fact that she originated in 1960s era Archie Comics doesn't exactly qualify her as ComicBookMovie.com material, but there's a slight twist. She's going to be a superhero! Apparently the film will be an origin story similar to that of Spider-Man, as it features a young girl comes to terms with her newfound powers. Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (Die In A Gunfight) will write the script, and Real Steel producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford are producing and Mark Waters (Mr. Popper's Penguins) is in talks to helm the reboot. There are no actresses currently being eyed for the title role, although it's thought they may go for an unknown.

Why not? It's a fun premise. I never saw the show (I was more of a Boy Meets World Fan), but this movie will be geared towards younger girls anyway, so why not give them a coming of age story akin to what boys have to spider-man?

I've seen the movie and sitcom. There's other shows in the 90's I was a much bigger fan of though.

I really don't see this working well. They don't have to make her a superhero.

@Wildaniel Great shows. You forgot Smart Guy on there. :P

Ha, I had a crush on Essence Atkins. Well, I still do.

@grif Ok...what about the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? Be gentle, that's my favorite sitcom. :P

Shes a better role model than Bella at least. I can kinda seeing this work. If they make it more about the magic and mysticism than the campiness of the TV series and cartoon this might be a fun idea.

Don't forget the animated series on ABC's Saturday cartoon lineup in the late 90s - early 2000s.

ah i remember the show in the 90's, i use to have a crush on melissa joan hart. I guess her being a superhero could work if they approached it like a dr strange type story...yeah she could be a female dr stange like character and it could totally work.

Ohhh... I love this.

However, Sabrina will NOT be a witch. She will, instead, be a mutant. And, not just any superhero, she will be a superhero with NINJA training. You know, not unlike some dark knight comic hero we all know and love.

And the title will be... wait for it...
Sabrina, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Girl!

Directed by Michael Bay.

It's a done deal!
