ARROW's Stephen Amell Discusses The Show And SMALLVILLE Comparisons

Stephen Amell (the actor who will play Olvier Queen in CW's Arrow) says that his take on the DC superhero has nothing in common with the Smallville version and also discusses the tone, costume and more.

"It's pretty kick ass," the actor tells MTV Splash Page of what we should expect from the CW's take on Green Arrow this Fall. "There's a lot of action; there's a lot of fighting. It's close hand to hand combat and it's aggressive. The entire pilot just keeps ramping up the entire way. You don't get a break." As for the training he went through (Amell can be seen looking extremely buff in the clip, trailer and TV spot) he said, "It was the basics; it was like 'wax on, wax off' stuff. I did a bunch of parkour, and then I got into weight training and the specific fight choreography for the pilot, and that sort of continued to ramp up as we went along."

"I think that when you see the pilot, other than in name, the characters really don't have anything in common," Amell confirmed when asked about any similarities between this and the Green Arrow introduced in Smallville and played by Justin Hartely. "It's very different and people will get that after about two minutes of the show." As for the costume, he added added, "The idea for the costume was I wanted to be able to put the costume on by myself. Because if I could put the costume on by myself that means that it's functional and if it's functional people will buy it. My boots are actually Nike Frees, which is kind of cool. It's leather and it's tight and it's aggressive, but I can move in it. People will like it."

@Nightmare7
I agree he should be wearing a mask, but he's a vigilante whereas Hawkeye isnt so he has no reason to hide his face...

Show looks... Actually awesome. I got my hopes up when I saw the first pic of Amell as Green Arrow. By the trailers, their will be more action in this than Smallville, which only had 5 minutes of action an episode.

"It's a real super hero show". We'll see. Is Arrow stuck in a world of his own or does he live in one where other super heroes/villains live and breath? Is there a larger DCU here? Anybody have actual super human powers or will it be stuck in a "If you work real hard & have a load of cashola you could do this too" world?

Can't wait to see this show. June 6th I believe. I don't mind the changes that were made for the show. Makes it unique and less cliche. Nice to see that this is going to be more action packed and story oriented rather than mindless drama. Nothing against Smallville, cause I love that show, but yeah, if I had to choose between an action packed television show or a drama...

I'll give this show a chance but a plug for a freaking shoe right off the bat doesn't bode very well...

@SuspenseSmith": WB used to be the shit. Smart Guy, Sister Sister, Roswell, Buffy, Felicity, Reba, Angel... I dunno what happened. Somewhere along the line they became this horrid teeny bopper "flavor of the moment" station, I think Angel's end was the metaphorical nail in the coffin for them. I wouldn't call them a second class station tbh, I would probably put them in 3rd.

yeah this show needs to be kinda gritty and very action packed to get the attention of people who didn't like Smallville and thought it was a glorified soap opera...cause it was.
