Success Of THE AVENGERS Leads To IRON MAN 3 Budget Increase; Production Details Revealed

According to the ever reliable lads over at Latino Review, the budget for Iron Man 3 has been increased from $140 million to $200 million following the box office success of Marvel's The Avengers. The success of the superhero ensemble has apparently resulted in the studio deciding to spend a lot more on their solo efforts, and Shane Black has been tasked with not only making the best Iron Man movie yet, but also the best Marvel movie too (so, uh, no pressure then...). The site also reveals that they were in Wilmington recently (visiting the set of another film which was being filmed there) and spotted the construction of what they describe as, "a large underwater tank and what looked like the interior of a jet fuselage (though it could also be some fancy windows in an underwater structure, it was just a skeleton when I peeped it)." The fact that Marvel Studios decided to up the budget can surely only be good news for fans. Principal photography officially kicked off on Iron Man 3 today so stay tuned for more details over the coming weeks and months.

IM2 had a $200M budget, so yeah, pretty much the same.

Just hope that don't increase the budget too much and over load it with too much fx and other shit like green lantern!!!

Not likely to happen but Marvel can't let their success go to their heads!!!

After The Avengers, I just can't wait to see upcoming solo films. IM3 should be great. Phase 2 begins!

Man.. Marvel is just owning on all fronts, now they say Ironman 3es budget is bigger... thats good news for both Thor and Captain America's franchises.. or anything else they make depending upon Ironman three's performance Box Office wise which is pretty much assured a success combined with avengers hype.

Isn't IM3 supposed to be about Tony being isolated ans stripped from his armor? Where's the need for 200M$?
Not complaining... just saying.

Thor 2 needs the most amount of money..especially if Beta Ray Bill is going to get an appereanance

Why would IM3 have a budget lower than the second? Yes it wasn't as popular as the first but it still made tons. I mean, Spider-man made the least at the box office, but SM3 had an even higher budget.

@brazilianbatman Thor definitely needs the bigger budget if they intend to explore the other realms, though its release date may make Marvel worried to invest so much into it.

With some of that money Marvel needs to grow a pair buy back the rights to some of their other properties.

I am guessing they set the original budget at 140 mill because even though it performed well, the reactions weren't as glowing as IM1, so they were playing it safe in case IM2 soured peoples tastes and the returns weren't there. But Avengers has given them the padding to pad the film further, and RDJ's performance in Avengers boosted their confidance in the returning audience and new fans.

@ ralfinader: Very true... unfortunately.

But damn, an X-Men film on the same scale as the Avengers just gives me chills. As nice as Marvel's movies have been I just don't care a lot whole about the characters they've put on screen so far.

Spider-Man, X-Men, and Fantastic Four are crucial pieces to their puzzle.

Sanderman, it's just you. Although I gotta be suspect, because 3 movies burned you out rather than 50 years of comic history...

Why do I get the feeling, as excited as I am, and even with the budget increase, the hype for this film is so vast and it might end up being really bad? Saying that, I don't actually mind Iron Man 2 even though it got slated (Excluding the whiplash scene in the last fight, god awful costume)

@thalidomide That is one of the funniest things I've seen YET as a lifelong Marvel fan. GOOD one.

I'm REALLY beginning to think over the last month that Iron Man 3 will be the BEST Marvel movie yet, even being a richer, much more layered and 'deeper' film than 'The Avengers' is...and I think it's the best CBM yet. We'll all just have to wait and see.

As for the description of a "LARGE UNDERWATER TANK"??

That could only mean ONE THING.

Make Mine Marvel, Bi88ches.

@RaleighAntrobus - Uncanny X-men was the only comics I collected. I would pick up other comics, Marvel or DC that sparked my interest, but for me, X-Men is what ruined my chances of not being a geek. I was just happy to see Singer's version on the big screen, and much happier with the sequel. But agree that it would be nice if Marvel had them back in the fold, especially after seeing the Avengers twice now (third time on Memorial day coming up). My only hope is seeing the costumed fun of the Avengers, and the $$'s it has made will motivate them to take the source material more seriously when Fox makes their next mutant movie. Unfortunately, due to the undeserved succes of First Class, that is likely a pipe dream.

If i was told a day before production that i have an extra 60 mil, i'd be happy but a little pissed. You can change a lot of story with 60 million, maybe do a scene that you thought impossible.
